THE Wandella Cricket Club has held a very successful sports evening, with the ladies catering exceptionally well for the large crowd.
Former Australian Test opening bowler Jason ‘Dizzy’ Gillespie was the guest speaker, and talked about his career in a family-friendly manner.
Some great stories giving an insight into Test cricket, mateship and many humorous incidents were followed by an extended question time.
Gillespie and “Minder” Mouse also had many signed photos for sale with the major raffle being a choice of one of these sports memorabilia pieces. Harry Sambrooks won the major prize and of course chose a picture of Swannies former champion Josh Kennedy. Another raffle was won by yours truly.
It was a wonderful night that could be recommended to any sporting club. Thanks Dizzy and Mouse.
WHILE on cricket, a video has been posted of a local cricketer throwing his bat. One local legend was heard to say: “Even when he throws his bat, he has too much bottom hand”.
Punishment has been served on this incident, but one who could be reprimanded is the one who posted the video.
The bat thrower has copped his lot and shown some class and moved on.
JOHN and Barb Campbell seem to be stowing their boat and caravan at son Gregor’s place in Ocean Grove.
The boat is most definitely JC’s, but Gregor went halves with dad in the caravan, and Barb and JC had a trip in it in 2021 then it disappeared to Ocean Grove.
JC has been out in the boat once since July 2023 and that was as a deckie, but they’ve had numerous reports that the fishing is excellent in Port Phillip Bay.
It’s probably time that they took it for another trip. Wonder if Gregor is prepared to have the van travel-ready by the time they get there?
You’d like to think that the boat was ready to go also, eh, JC? You must realise this is Gregor’s excuse as an excellent way to get you two to go and visit.
HAD a chat to old mate Chris “Biggsy” Gray last week and among other things, were talking about meeting up with old friends.
Biggsy said how he met good friend Mick Treacy up in northern Queensland for a few quiet beverages. Mick just lives up the other end of Kerang from Biggsy, so why wait until you travel way up north to meet? It’s because life gets in the way. So at least once a year there should be a catch-up of all your old mates.
The Kerang Turf Club’s December meeting is always good for a reunion as some folks come home for Christmas.
Too often we only see our old friends at funerals, as we are all getting to that age. Yep, Biggsy turned 60 the other day. All the very best young fella.
Speaking of getting together, I’m pretty sure that the Lake Meran Festival held on Sunday could turn into the town’s perfect get-together.
DEB Cottrell is renowned for winning everything she enters … and loves it. She even entered the Lake Meran Festival Colouring Competition.
Competition judges were tested by the quality of all entrants, but Deb didn’t colour in a sky or any sand. She also went outside the lines. Still, as the only entrant in the over 66-year-old section, “Conda” said he was looking for a prize suitable for Deb’s maturity. Maybe some crayons.
WITH the AFL set to start pretty soon (nine days) a former local has impressed in his club’s practice matches so far.
Cohuna lad Josh Treacy kicked three goals from set shots before half time in the Fremantle intra-club match. The fact that the three goals were from set shots indicated that Josh was taking some pretty good pack marks.
After half time he presented well for the outlet kick with his strength and size noticeable in marking contests.
Fremantle are really hoping that Josh can take his footy to the next level. Great to see a local lad doing well in the big time.
NOT too confident of the Blues going anywhere this season, although I would love to be wrong.
The AFL finalists will most likely stay very similar to last season with Hawthorn quite confident that they will do much better. But then again, most of the Saints supporters think they’ll do all right too.
NOTICED that old mate “Chookeyes” is still catching more fish than most. When you love it that much and are doing it that often, I suppose you have to catch something. Good on you Colin. At least you shouldn’t starve.
