KERANG GOLF

FOR the commencement of the second round in Northern Valley Pennant, the Golf team played against town rivals Kerang on their greens.

Not a good result for Golf with all rinks being overpowered by the strong Kerang combination.

Only Ritchie Murray’s rink showed some resilience, leading narrowly late in the game, to eventually go down by one shot.

Frank Ritchie was down by eight and Dallas Mathers had a day he would like to forget. Overall, a loss by 28 shots.

Division 2 travelled to Cohuna Golf to take on the top side and didn’t have much joy either, with all rinks finishing behind their hosts.

Closest result was the Laurie Gray rink going down by three, Craig Beck’s team losing by five and Graeme Hayes’ team down by 15. Final score 49/72.

Division 3 were at home to Gunny-Golf and this was our only good news of the day, with wins on two rinks and a close loss on the other.

Robert “Fonzy” Taylor was a late call-up, also playing his first game for the season, and he led his team to a resounding victory by 16 shots.

This was our best winning rink of the day and wins the Royal Hotel vouchers for this week.

Well done to “Fonzy”, Rosie Lauglin, Ronnie McKerrow and Tony Pearson. A 64/47 win and second place on the ladder.

No midweek bowls this past week, with the Northern District Carnival being played on greens in our playing area.

The Ritchies – Frank and Murray – acquitted themselves very well in the pairs event held on the Monday and Tuesday, winning their section and reaching the semi-finals of the knockout stage at Barham on Tuesday afternoon, eventually succumbing to the eventual winners.

Well done on some excellent bowling over the two days.

Twilight triples played their fifth night and a new team has won the night, with the Royal Hotel combination just having enough shots up to pip the Team Charles combo.

Rob Fisher, Ritchie Murray and David “Rat” Conlan were the recipients of the Choice Cut Butchers vouchers for this week.

Chocolates to The Golfers, but they were not at presentations, so Hayes Real Estate were the happy campers this week.

The ladder sees Team Charles surge to the top with 124 points, followed by Eagles 44 on 122, Hayes Real Estate 120 and Hirdy’s Buslines on 103, so some interesting games will take place over the next three weeks to see who wins the trophies at season’s end.

Thursday social had 19 players and the winners were Frank Ritchie, Trevor Linton and Wayne “Tige” Neville.

Runners-up were John Duckworth, Rob “Curly” Curtis and Ronnie McKerrow, with the “chocolates” going to Jim McLeish, Noel Robertson and David (ex-Quambatook, now northern Qld) McGrath – well done.

Tournament travellers went to Pyramid Hill on Sunday and came home winners.

They also won two raffle prizes – well done Rob Fisher for driving “Fonzy”, Noel Robertson and Stuart Robinson and guiding them to this success.

Also, Frank and Lorraine Ritchie ventured to Cohuna to play in the State Mixed Pairs qualifying and won their section.

They play again next Sunday against “Spike” and Jenny Laursen, with the winner going to the regional final.

Our Christmas party is to be held on Sunday evening, December 15, in the clubrooms.

It will a fully catered for event and names, with payment will be required by December 7.

Santa will be in attendance and a fun time will be had.

Allison has done a great job organising this event so members are encouraged to support the club, by putting your name on the list on the noticeboard.

Championship games have to be played ASAP as the big green is being lasered and top dressed in early December, so make sure you get your games played.

The Men’s B Grade draw has been done and is on the noticeboard.

If you have entered this event, please check the “play by” dates and get your games organised as well.

Our annual Wheelbarrow fundraiser has again been well organised by Carol Pay and the first day of selling tickets was a resounding success.

The roster for selling tickets has been done, and members will also be given books.

This is our largest fundraiser for the year, so please support your club by selling all your tickets and returning the books to Carol.

COHUNA GOLF

OUR social bowls agenda was interrupted last week by the Northern Carnival, where we contributed by hosting two sections of pairs, and supplying quite a few entrants in both the pairs and fours.

A great pity that other Northern District clubs don’t support this event, as it puts bowls in this area on the map, but to continue it needs expanded numbers.

Well done to Bluey Fletcher and team who reached the final of the Fours, and also Pat Quinn and Ian Howard who got into the semis in the pairs.

Ron Eckhardt and Greg Ritchie also won their section.

Local activity began with our Wednesday night competition, with a trio of fresh faces taking the honours this week.

Congratulations to Margot Henty, George Payne and Glenn Lerossignol on a top win.

A very even competition, with the winners hard to choose.

No pairs on Thursday due to outside attractions, but back again this week, don’t forget to confirm with Jean if you’re playing.

Pennant results at the weekend were more than pleasing, all teams bar the Gunny Golfers taking the points.

Our Northern Valley side crossed the river, and won on two rinks, Bluey Fletcher again the standout.

Jarred home by three, with Harrison down by one after dropping big numbers towards the end of his match.

The ones hosted Kerang in tough conditions, a fast green and howling wind.

Nevertheless all stuck to the task in hand, recording two wins and a draw.

The Bower vouchers to Peter Bibby’s rink of Doug Peace, Phil McManus and Gwen Campbell, with Gary Easton home by one and Bruce Morrison drawing.

Sneaking up the ladder now, time to consolidate at midseason.

A lively black snake appeared at match end to add a bit more excitement to the day.

Division 2 was also at home, Kerang Golf their opponents.

Led by Des Keely’s well-performed side (up by 15) they won all three rinks.

Mal Appleby five up, while Greg Mathers came back in wonderful fashion to pinch a three-shot win after being heaps behind at the break.

The Gunny Golfers went across to Kerang Golf, where the wind was also a factor.

John Prout kept his unbeaten record intact by rolling Dave Randell by two, the other two rinks lowering their colours to pretty strong combinations.

The ND mixed pairs was played in sectional format at our greens on Sunday, but with a late scratching making it a bit harder for the organisers.

At the end of the day we saw Brodie Harker and Jenny Laursen win Section 1, and they will play Frank and Lorraine Ritchie, the Section 2 winners, next week in the final, again at Cohuna Golf.

Thanks to the social committee for organising Saturday night’s meal venue, excellent as always. They are staging an old-time casserole tea on the November 29 at our rooms.

Hope the temperature is on our side. Bookings are essential to assist catering.

Advance notice has also been posted for our Christmas break-up on December 13, outside caterers providing a two-course meal for $22.
