Cohuna Golf bowls notes

Cohuna Golf

CUP day saw an enthusiastic group firstly take to the greens early, then head indoors for a great lunch accompanied by the customary sweeps and competitions.

Bowls winners were Yvonne, Glenda and Margot, while the competition money seemed to be well spread.

Midweek Pennant saw the ones trek to Pyramid Hill, and despite our two rink wins the home side won out.

Peter and Yvonne won well, but we couldn’t counter Marie Scott’s good form in the third game.

A similar story in Division 2, where we hosted the newest side at this level, Gunbower.

Ian Morrison was close, but Cheryle a few away as the visitors came pretty well armed. Let’s hope for better luck when we resume in a fortnight.

Wednesday night bowlers are getting a great run with the weather, and another bumper crowd turned out.

The best of the triples was Winko McLoughlan, Alison Murphy (a handicap next week) and Dave McNamara.

The teams’ section is also running well, with a progress ladder due next week.

Onto our Thursday pairs, and once again Mal Hogan topped up his super fund.

He teamed with Mike Henshaw to street the field, with expat Marty Halliday and Gary Spittal claiming the repechage cash.

Kimmy’s vouchers went the way of Tony Williams and Mary Rodwell. Don’t forget it’s a 10.30am start from now on.

Saturday Pennant drew a large group to our greens, where the game of most interest was the Northern Valley match between our lads and Murray Downs.

Aided by big wins to Bluey Fletcher and Harrison Keely the result was never in doubt, although Jarred Hammond was forced into a draw by the Lehmann rink.

Bower vouchers to Bluey, Jason Heard, Ian Coates and Mick Carmody.

Our ones travelled to Gunbower and enjoyed a cracking game, with scores seesawing all day.

Gary Easton and Peter Bibby both played draws, but dropping a couple of big numbers hurt Pat Quinn’s chances, as he then finished eight in arrears of John Hogan.

Not a bad result, knowing we had a couple of players missing.

Division 2 also copped the backlash of absentees and were a touch undermanned against a handy Kerang side.

Mal Appleby’s rink continued their great form to win by heaps, but alas not enough to cover the other two losses.

Back to full strength next week, and into the winners’ circle again hopefully.

Last but not least our Gunny Golf combined team also played Kerang, and did a marvellous job considering their line-up.

John Prout won his game by two, while Steve Henty almost pinched a win in his first outing as a skipper.

JD down by six saw us five behind at match end after a very creditable performance.

On the home front we held several sections of the carnival pairs at our club this week, many thanks to all the workers who looked after them, while several members are continuing to play in the fours at either Cohuna or Barham.

Good luck to you all.
