Bowls Notes

KERANG

THE sun shone brightly warming the spirits of 36 players who ventured out for our weekly Black Duck Triples last Tuesday.

Shane has our greens running beautifully, with some bowlers handling the speed more skilfully than others, as is evidenced in the results.

It was good to see George Fenton back into the swing of things leading for Fraser Macquire and Barry Theobald to win both games with a score of 26 shots up for the day, taking out first prize.

There must have been a form reversal for Judy McKerrow, Peter Waters and Barb Williams after losing the first game. They showed no mercy to the opposition by finishing 18 shots up in the second game.

There was no joy for anyone when the jackpot number of -3 was drawn out leaving the jackpot to grow to $204 on offer today.

Names need to be in by 11am for a 12.30pm start for a chance to win it.

Members, or intending members, who wish to play during the 2024-25 season are requested to add their names to the list on the noticeboard in the club rooms. Memberships should be paid at Kerang Sporties for the coming season. Please attend to that as soon as possible.

We are welcoming in the spring with our Spring Carnival beginning on September 7 and culminating with a Special Black Duck session on September 10, It will be a good warm-up for the pennant season as we have a practice match against Swan Hill Racecourse on October 6. Please put your names on the list if you are available for that day.

Last Thursday saw the first round of the Ladies’ August Tournaments at Kerang Bowling Club.

Vice-president June Maddox was pleased to welcome teams from Barham, Cohuna, Cohuna Golf, Gunbower, Kerang Golf, Lake Boga, Pyramid Hill and of course ourselves.

There was a light-hearted atmosphere for the day with many renewing friendships and others meeting people for the first time.

After two games of 10 ends, we all retired to the clubrooms for a sumptuous afternoon tea. Once the scores were tallied it was revealed that Helen McBain’s team of June Maddox, Jacqui Jenkins and Gayle Teasdale was tied with Noelene Brown’s team of Merrilee Moss, Elaine Bartram and Tanya Black on 52 points.

However, Helen’s team was declared winners with 17 shots up and Noelene’s team from Cohuna Golf runners-up with five shots up. Prize winning didn’t stop there, as the cards were fanned, and lucky lead, second, third and skip were drawn, as well as lucky seats at each table, ensuring a snack of chocolate could be shared on the journey home.

Thanks to our members June and Lorraine for their generous donation of a basket of fruit, a box of goodies and an orchid for the raffle and to all who prepared the delicious afternoon tea. All agreed it was a great day.

Next Thursday sees us all venture over to Kerang Golf for the second week in the five-week series.

Sending best wishes to our regular scribe Damien for a speedy return to full health.
