KERANG’S Progress Association is looking for committee members to help with the successful programs they run throughout the year, along with a couple of new projects they are hoping to get up.
The philosophy of the group is to maintain a viable and livable Kerang.
One of the most well-known events is the Kerang New Year’s Eve in Atkinson Park. The organisation now has its sights set on a Lunar New Year Festival.
Each year the Kerang Progress Association raises funds to provide the celebration free of charge for residents and visitors.
Association secretary Jacqueline Hibbert said part of the livability of Kerang is ensuring that there are events that are inclusive for everybody.
“We would also hope to be an arching body so that many other groups in the community can come together with us in applying for grants or approaching council and other things like that so that we come as a united voice,” Ms Hibbert said.
“A Lunar New Year Festival is an idea to create more connectivity in the community, we are a multi-cultural society, more and more people are coming from different parts of the world and Kerang is a part of that as well.
“It also gives people a reason to come together and be a part of the community, a thriving community and that is very important.
“We also want to attract visitors to the area and we are going from strength to strength in that regard.”
The group has 20 people and the organisation has been operating for more than 10 years.
Another focus of the organisation is to look at working with council to encourage people that stop at Atkinson Park, as they travel through the town to explore the CBD.
In the past they have supported refugees to undertake vocational training at TAFE such as tractor driving and fencing to give them greater skills and employment opportunities.
The association also provides traders with public liability insurance to cover side walk sales and Easter and Christmas promotions.
Meeting on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 7pm the organisation would love to welcome new or perspective members at Kerang Museum Meeting room.
