Bowls notes, November 20

Cohuna

THERE was another good roll-up for social bowls last Tuesday and the showery weather cleared to a fine afternoon.

Winners were Jules Mastin, Alison Ainger and Rob Wilson.

It was great to see Jules in the winners’ circle again, doing well at her first season at our club.

There was no Midweek Pennant play due to the country carnival. Most games were played at Barham, with Cohuna catering for the spillover players.

By all accounts, all bowlers were more than pleased with our greens and also with the catering provided by the club.

Saturday Pennant results were:

In Division 1, Cohuna 1 lost to Cohuna Golf 1- 10/76 to 2/57.

In Division 2, Cohuna 2 defeated Cohuna Golf 2 – 10/71 to 2/68.

In Division 3A, Cohuna 3 defeated Pyramid Hill 2 – 2/92 to 0/50.

Greg Beck’s rink won by five shots, Ken Strachan’s rink by 17 shots, and Trevor Allen’s rink won by 20 shots. Division 3B had a bye.

Last Sunday, a group of Cohuna bowlers travelled to a tournament in Tongala. Noddy Hosking, Geoff Reade and Gavin, as well as a ring-in skip from Moama won the day.

Kerang

THE weather for Weekend Pennant was conducive to some good bowls and a pleasant atmosphere with all teams home together for the first time in a while.

The outlook on the days play was one of anticipation and eagerness.

Kerang 1 outpointed the Gunbower 1 outfit with a three-rink, 64-shot win.

Team Hancock prevailed over L’Hullier, after not having it their own way for the first half by 17 shots.

Team Wilson resumed normal service with an 18-shot win over Davis and team Pocock defeated Hogan by 28 shots, highlighted by back to back sixes.

The win gives us a much needed percentage boost and second spot on the NDPA ladder. Defending premiers at home this week will be a test, so we will have to be on our game.

Kerang 2 struck an in-form Barham 2 side and were found wanting at the finish line.

Despite team Heins’ 19-shot win, we were well short of Barham 2 in the other two rinks.

Team Frantz went down by 10 shots and team Pascoe by 27 for an overall deficit of 18 shots.

Chins up, guys. Work hard for each other and things will be different this week. Still sitting in the top four with an upcoming clash with Cohuna Golf, never an easy one. Heads down and work hard.

Kerang 3 encountered the Leitchville combination and walked away victors by 53 shots.

Team Maguire and team Coobs won by 27 and 28 shots respectively, with team Sutherland lamenting a two-shot loss.

The win puts this team in a position to launch at all-out attack on fourth position and some finals action.

Gunny Golf this week will be an interesting clash and will further define ladder positions.

Kerang 4 met arch-rival and sister club in Kerang Golf and walk off the green triumphant with a two-rink, 20-shot win.

Team Adams won by seven shots over McKerrow and team Davies succeeded by 18 shots over Borg.

Team Teasdale had a valiant performance although going down by five shots.

Cohuna 4 this week will be a battle which will be met with boldness.

The final of the club singles was played on Sunday with the results unknown as it was played after this weekly summary was put together. More news on the outcome next week.

Practice is still Monday evenings and, if you want, there is also an unofficial roll-up Saturday mornings at 10am.

Last week we witnessed some good bowling at the country carnival over the two days at the Kerang Bowling Club.

Many thanks to all our members who worked to make these two days a very successful event.

Just a quick update on our members’ efforts at the Pyramid Hill tournament last week.

Trevor Pocock (s), Kevin Teasdale, Gayle Teasdale and Barb Williams finished runners up to Shayne Morris’ Boort team, who defeated them by one shot in their second game.

Sixteen teams from a wide area enjoyed a great day of bowling and friendship followed by a sumptuous afternoon tea.

Our gala day is Friday, November 24. Please put your teams or single entries also in to Helen McBain or Barb Williams by 4pm on November 23 and support our day.

Kerang Golf

TWO games at home this week, after none the previous Saturday.

Division 1 hosted Leitchville and at the afternoon tea break, the Leitchville team had a lead of 21 shots overall, but the cheese and biscuits proved a wonderful refresher for the Golf team who went on to register a resounding win by 17 shots.

The Frank Ritchie-skipped rink of Jim McLeish, Lloyd Murray and wife Lorraine had a 16-shot win after winning 11 of the last 13 ends against Roy Dehne.

This victory was the best on the day for Kerang Golf and they are the recipients of the Royal Hotel vouchers for this week.

Ritchie Murray’s rink continued their good form, to win with a 31/18 scoreline, over Trevor Hore. The Howard McClelland rink had a tough day, losing to Roma Opie 29/17.

Division 2 were against Cohuna Golf 3 and what an exciting finish to this game ensued after the Kerang Golf team had a substantial lead heading in to the last few ends.

The result came down to the last end between Graeme Hayes and Alan Porter, with the Cohuna Golf team having all the momentum, with scores tied overall and only the last end to be played between these two rinks.

First, Kerang Golf drew the shot, only to be countered by Cohuna Golf, until Sonia McLeish played a telling bowl to gain the ascendancy again for the home team.

With the skippers’ bowls still to come, it was still anyone’s game. Alan just missed with his first bowl, and Graeme played a “blocking” type of bowl. Alan’s last bowl failed to change the head and Kerang Golf held two shots and won overall by that margin – a nail-biter for all who were watching.

Although Graeme lost 20/24, winning the last end was the clincher. Laurie Gray and Carol Pay both had wins by three shots and the overall score was 67/65. Well done to Division 2, they just outside the top four at the halfway point of the season.

Division 3 travelled to Kerang to play against Kerang 4 and had a day they would rather forget. Noel Robertson’s rink was the only shining light, with a 24/19 win against Gayle Teasdale. Judy McKerrow was down by seven shots to Jo Adams and Gary Borg’s team had a “stinker” against Alan Davies. Overall, they went down by 20 shots and now a game outside the final four.

Thursday social was enjoyed by 12 players with the popular 2-4-2 pairs being the game. There was only one combination who won both games – Bryce McLeish and Dave King, so they took the major prize. The runners up were Jim McLeish and Marlene Rawson. The chocolates to Ken Pay and Neil Paul.

Twilight triples played their fifth night in warm conditions. Four teams ended up on the same score – 29 points – and with a winning margin of 10 shots, the Graeme Hayes Real Estate team, with principal Graeme back in the combination, teaming with Dave Wood and Brett Hipworth, winning the Choice Cut Butchers vouchers.

The runners up were Gray, Lynch and Wilson team with John Lynch, Dave King (sub for Laurie Gray) and Paul Saunders (sub for Andrew Wilson) with six shots up, to go with their 29 points.

The “encouragement” chocolates went to Hirdy’s Buslines, led by daughter Hayley, in her dad’s absence, along with Erin Byrne and Mark Higgins were ecstatic with their “win”. Gray Lynch and Wilson are on top of the ladder with 144 points, followed by Team JTS on 119, McAndo and Deadlies – Ian, both on 118.

Club championship games need to be completed as the play-by date approaches. If you haven’t arranged your game, it is now time to start. The match committee will be strict on these dates.

Our CluBarham Star Day Any Combination Fours Tournament is fast approaching on Sunday, December 3. Entries have been coming in slowly, so if you wish to play, please organise your team. There is an entry sheet on the noticeboard, or ring Aldo (0407 310 762) or Frank Ritchie (0409 439 029).
