KERANG GOLF
THE Northern Valley Division 1 team travelled to play their first game at Murray Downs last Saturday, and although having a big win on one green, the other two rinks were defeated, resulting in a win for the home team.
Dallas Mather’s rink was the shining light with a 17 shot win over John Caldwell, however, Frank Ritchie’s and Richard Murray’s teams were defeated.
Overall, an 83/58 result for Murray Downs.
Division 2 were at home to Cohuna 2 and were not very hospitable to their visitors winning on two rinks and drawing on the other.
The big winner was the Laure Gray skipped team of Mick Pors, John Duckworth and Allison Medson who accounted for their opponents by 18 shots, 33/15, and were the recipients of the Royal Hotel vouchers for this week – well done.
Graeme Hayes and team won by two shots after leading by as many as 11, early in the game and Greg Beck’s team had a draw, after getting in front with two ends remaining, after a close game.
Division 3 went to Leitchville to take on Leitchville 2, with the Gary Borg team winning by five shots, and David Randell’s rink down by eight, it was left to the Noel Robertson team to get the game in Kerang Golf’s favour.
However, a drawn game was not enough to get the points, with a three shot loss overall.
Midweek secured their first Division 1 win with a nail-biting win over Pyramid Hill.
Two games finished in tied results and Jimmy McLeish’s team won by two shots and that was the overall difference in scores at the end.
Congratulations on the win – may there be many more.
Jimmy beat Tony Cantwell 20/18, Frank Ritchie tied with Roma Opie 19 each and Lloyd Murray and Marie Scott tied at 21 each.
Division 2 continued on their winning way, with Marlene Rawson’s rink leading the way, against Barham 3, with a 26/15 win and David Randell won also 23/19.
This team has now won three out of four games and sits on top of the ladder.
Twilight Triples continued in beautiful warm weather last Wednesday evening and it is great to see all teams enjoying themselves on the greens.
The winners this week were Hirdy’s Buslines, with coach/captain Alan Hird, getting a couple of seasoned substitutes in Shane Waddingham and Scott Bremner to help him amass 32 points and take home the Choice Cut Meat vouchers for this week.
The runners-up were Team Charles, just in front Lions, chocolates to Rotary.
The ladder has changed complexion, with defeat of the Golfers.
Now Hayes Real Estate and Eagles 44 are joint leaders with 86 points, followed by Taylor Ashton Painting on 84 and The Golfers on 69, round out the top four.
More action tomorrow evening – if you would like to have a go, give Aldo a ring on 0407 310762.
Thursday Social returned with 14 players and not one combination could win both their games.
A countback separated first from last, with Bernie Beck, Sonia McLeish, Trevor Linton and Jim McLeish winning with 11 shots up.
At the other end, the chocolates went to Marlene Rawson, Barry Theobald and John Murphy.
Terry White Triples will be staged this Thursday – if you wish to play, get in quick.
Give Aldo (0407 310762) or Frank Ritchie (0409 439029) a call to book your spot.
Our next tournament is the CluBarham Star Day on Sunday, December 1, so start organising your teams for this day.
The Ladies Match Committee has done the draws for the Club Championship and B Grade Singles.
All the info is on the noticeboard, so games can be played anytime from now.
COHUNA GOLF
TRIPLES was the nominated game for social bowls on Tuesday, with the team of Rhonda Bibby, Val Farrant and Noelene Brown collecting the trophies.
A reminder of cup day activities this week, bowls from 11am and a luncheon and cup activities thereafter.
Bowls to begin early from the 19th onwards.
Midweek pennant saw Golf Division One involved in another cliff-hanger, with fortune favouring us this time against Barham.
Due to a handy lead by the Bibby rink, and tight games on the other two we prevailed by a single shot, the former thirteen up and two down by six.
The Twos also battled hard for points, with Cheryle’s win by six neatly covering Ian’s loss by three.
Another good team effort, and great to see the improvement in the several bowlers representing us for the first time.
Kimmy’s vouchers to Cheryle’s quartet.
A beautiful evening greeted Wednesday night bowlers, with the biggest field yet enjoying the conditions.
It was that man again, Matty Heap, at the helm of the winning side, assisted by Jameson Melbourne, Cheryle Cooke and Alison Murphy.
Well done organisers to have everything up and running so smoothly.
No rest for the keen, with several lining up again for our pairs event, along with a goodly number of visitors.
Winners who obviously mastered a very quick green were Mal Hogan and Corale Jones, with Gary Spittal and Kay Currie attaching themselves to the repechage cash.
With afternoons getting hotter we are starting at 10 am from this week onwards.
While all this was going on, two pairs of our members were acquitting themselves well in the 60 and over pairs finals at Barham.
Both Yvonne and Gwen, and Ron and Michael will represent our club at the Regional finals later in the season, after wins to hold the local titles.
Pennant results all favoured us bar the Gunny Golfers who made the trip to Wakool with quite a few regulars missing.
Many thanks to those who put their hand up to help out.
Snow Baker’s rink did best, level on the last end only to drop a three.
The Bower vouchers went their way, assisting Snow were Rhonda, Irene and Corrie.
Northern Valley players faced possibly their biggest challenge yet at Kerang, with only Bluey Fletcher’s rink able to stamp any authority on their game.
He defeated Dale Hancock by eleven, the other two games being tied before their last ends.
Both gained the winning shots, culminating in a clean sheet, but not as convincingly as we would have liked.
The Ones hosted Barham, and again the quick green played havoc with many of their bowlers.
Gary Easton was a big winner, 37-7, whilst Peter Bibby got home by two in a dour struggle against Shane Manners.
Pat Quinn, although down, held ground to prevent a blow-out on his rink, so overall an excellent result.
Division Two played Barham also, but over the river under the Dome.
Their good form continued, with both the Mathers and Keely rinks winning well, allowing Mal Appleby’s one shot defeat to rate as inconsequential.
All Saturday sides are figuring in top four positions at this stage, let’s hope the run continues.
Members intent on playing matches should check greens availability, as with a very busy fortnight coming up, watering and preparation will not be halted for random games.
One green is available from Tuesday to Saturday, although next week the country carnival holds precedence on Monday and Tuesday.
Thanks to Phil and his helpers for the sun-shade installation during the week, it will be of great value from now on.
KERANG BOWLS
KERANG Bowling Club had mixed fortunes at Pennant on Saturday with one team getting up and three putting in some gutsy performances. In the Northern Valley Competition, Kerang met a very solid Cohuna Golf outfit and went down by 16 shots all rinks down. Fletcher skipped away from Hancock and the margin was eight and 12 shots for the remainder. Teams Wilson and Lunghusen had tight tussles all day with a few things going against us in the closing stages. This shows we aren’t far away from the yardstick of the Northern Valley Competition.
In Division 1 Kerang played Leitchville and went down swinging with two narrow losses and a tie. Team Hein was 17 all at the end of play with Team Brown and Pay going down by four. That is the nature of the revamped competition as anyone can pop up and beat anyone. The loss has Kerang still thereabouts near the four.
In Division 2, Kerang played Pyramid Hill and came away wanting with Team Adams the lone ranger with a seven shot win. The other two rinks had losses by 16 and 23 shots and would rather let Pennant results through to the keeper this week.
In Division 3, we came away winners by six shots over a plucky Cohuna unit with Teams King and Rosewall winning by six and four respectively and Team Hastie narrowly going down for an overall win.
In the Black Duck social triples we had 24 player taking part with J. McLeish, J. McKerrow and B. Roche scooping the win with +24. Largest margin for the second game was +4 coming from the hands of N. Robertson, Borgy and J. Murphy. The Jackpot was once again claimed and it went to W. Neville, B. Theobald and D. Warke a little heavier in the wallets.
Keep an eye out for events on the board in the rooms and also upcoming tournaments elsewhere in the state. A nice social hot dog night was sponsored by David Orr and was well received by the Members who hung around. We also had representation at the Trivia night who wore their bowls gear with pride. No prizes for guessing who they were.
Our Melbourne Cup Day replaces Black Duck this week. The day will include bowls, a finger food lunch, raffles and sweeps. You don’t need to be a bowler to attend – join in any aspect of the day’s activities, just enjoy the day. Bring food to share for lunch if possible. If you are playing bowls, please have your name in by 9:30am for a 10:30am start. There is a list up for names.
We will be hosting some of the Pairs events as part of the Northern Country Carnival on November 11 and 12. Members will be needed to set up for the days of play and assist with catering so don’t be backward in coming forward to help with the work if you are not playing.
Practice is Fridays and there are drinks afterwards at bar prices for those who would like to do so.
