Day of laughs

KERANG Football Netball Club celebrated its Ladies Day with an afternoon full of laughter, joy and Drag Bingo.

The ladies were joined by their host, entertainer “Freida Commitment”, who travelled all the way from St Kilda.

The day was organised by Tahnee Shay and Jo Dibsdale.

Ms Dibsdale said they wanted to bring something new to the club.

“When we were allocated the event by the social committee, we knew we wanted to go big or go home,” she said.

“I think we were a bit hesitant at the start, because we really wanted to have a point of difference for the day.”

Ms Shay said she was inspired by another club hosting a similar event.

“I got the idea from another football club on Facebook, I saw that a club in Bendigo was doing Drag Queen Bingo,” she said.

“When I saw that I thought it would be a great idea for something different for us to do.

“There were a lot of people that went who had never seen a Drag Queen before, it’s something that isn’t really a thing up this way.”

Ms Dibsdale said she also wasn’t sure what to expect from the performance.

“Freida had asked how many of us had seen a Drag show before and it was pretty minimal,” she said.

“But she was absolutely wonderful. She had everyone really engaged, a whole room of women ranging in ages from 17 all the way up to their 80s.

“It was so nice to just let her run the show, we’d sort of just asked her to lead the way. That allowed Tahnee and me to really enjoy the day as well.

“She drove up and back in the day, which is quite the trek.

“We were all very keen to get photos with her afterwards and it got to the point where she had to say enough is enough, I’ve got to drive home.”

Freida also drew the numerous raffles held on the afternoon.

Businesses connected with the club from as far as Melbourne donated prizes.

Ms, Shay said she would recommend Drag Bingo to other clubs hosting their Ladies Day.

“I had a fantastic time,” she said. “It’s something that we’ve never done before, and it was amazing to see everyone smiling and the fun we all having.

“Everyone was kicking back, really enjoying their time and just soaking up the moment.

“We’d had a few comments from people that they haven’t laughed that much in a long time.”
