COPPED an “Oy” in the street from Paul Douglass Toohey last week as he was obviously up for a chat.
Paul was once the gun mechanic alongside “Chooka” at McCluskey’s Service Centre and now runs his one man show out the Boort Road.
Funny, but Kurl’s hands don’t show that they have done the work that Paul’s have.
Have an inkling that the young fella was once a Pyramid Hill lad from way back when.

SEE that Kerang’s Division 1 tennis team had a win over the Barham side in the opening round of the Northern District Tennis. Barham had a couple of their top players out, but Sue Lancaster and Michelle Noonan were on top of their game. Did I hear that they didn’t lose a set? It wouldn’t be just experience that got them through as they can both play.
Also heard that Ben Taylor had to pull out as he was a bit sore. Instead of playing he served behind the bar and probably covered more ground than he would have if he’d played. It was a big crowd at the Kerang tennis – four deep at the bar.
Could be that Ben was soft – nothing was swollen – so he could have played.
MOULAMEIN has placed a team in the Northern District Tennis Division 2 competition and were on top of the ladder following the first round.
Think it might be quite a few years since any competitive tennis was played in the Moulamein area.
KERANG Cricket captain Ron Bright said he was a bit sore last Monday after he had a day out on Saturday, October 19, where he smacked up 95 against Murrabit.
He also said that he will be running less next week, so whoever Kerang played against on Saturday, I hope they set the field deep. While on that, playing with the full ground would create some interest. No bonus points any more so nothing stopping this.
DID I see that “Buddha” has put his head together with Charmane at the Sporties, and so Sporties are running social poker starting tomorrow evening down at the Bowling Club?
Great work team, a wonderful initiative that could get bigger than Ben Hur.
WHILE on the Sporties, they are launching their new menu on November 8 with an all you can eat self-serve salad and vege bar.
Kerang’s Royal is also putting out some rippa meals and is still a popular spot for a meal out, and of course the Bower Tavern in Cohuna and Matesey’s in Koondrook have set a pretty high standard over the years, which still continues. But my favourite meal is still Donny’s medium-rare eye fillet, salad and chips. Mmmmm. Meat prices prevent me seeing this too often. You’d think a son as a butcher would help.
WAS speaking to local bloke Bruce the carpet steam cleaner recently and we soon realised that I knew of some of his rellies from the Serpentine area.
Anyway, turns out that Bruce’s partner is the daughter of none other than old mate “Chookeyes” – that’s Colin Delamare for those not in the know.
Being aware that “Chookeyes” was currently up north fishing, Bruce informed me that the old bloke loves fishing. You’d assume that he was good at it then. But is he though? Is he really?
Bruce is steam cleaning carpets in the local area. All the best to all.
“CHOOKEYES” is on the way back to Kerang with “Hippo” and “Sambo” who did the “Wilkinson” Canine Express up to Darwin recently. Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?
ULTIMA Footy Club are looking to join the CMFNL.
First question would be what was it that made them want to leave the Tyrell league back in the mid-70s? Now they want to leave the GRFNL. Is a pattern occurring?
They clearly recruit the majority of their players from the Swan Hill area, so the move appears a logical one and they have also put in the groundwork to investigate their club’s best option (96 per cent vote at their meeting). I hope that their club members show the same loyalty that the club needs to show to the league they compete in.
This may herald the end to the Golden Rivers FNL, but why would the Central Rivers Board allow it to happen? Either way, footy in general will continue, but it will bring it back to the bare bones of “If you want to play footy, you should be able to”.
A suggestion to help country footy – drop the age of the juniors to under-16, do everything in your power to take the stigma away from playing Reserves footy.
