INCLEMENT weather (still) forced the cancellation of Tuesday’s ladies bowls, but cleared enough for Thursday’s pairs to proceed.
A good field enjoyed the better conditions with the majority of matches being quite close.
The best of the two game winners were Alan Porter and John Pearson with plus 13, whilst the repechage event saw Laurie Forde and Phil McManus scoop the pool.
The jackpot number of 36 was well out of reach, with a few requests to leave the bigger numbers out of the draw. This might happen as the jackpot has now reached $70.
Although midweek pennant commences this week, there are still plenty of bowlers looking for a game, so our pairs will continue unabated at this stage.
With Saturday pennant commencing this Saturday, this Friday after practice there is a two-course tea provided for all and sundry. This will be extra enjoyable if last year’s efforts are any sort of a guide.
A team (or teams) is required for Wakool’s star tournament this Sunday, and names for interested participants in the State Singles, both men and women, need to be into Yvonne by the weekend. This event is to be held at our club on October 16.
On Saturday, Cohuna hosted an impromptu practice match between our two clubs, with a great turn out of bowlers from both town clubs taking part. Our sister club Gunbower sent nearly a dozen along as well so both greens were chock-a-block.
Apparently golf amassed enough shots to win the day, although the practice and comradeship were the real winners. Our trophies went to Cohuna’s best rink, that of Frank Tonn, whilst our top scorer was skipped by Harrison Keely. All sides bar one are away for the first week of pennant, with a Division Two side having an early look at the new Barham complex.
Good luck to all our members in their pennant endeavours this week, especially those new members taking part in a team competition with us for the first time.

Kerang Golf
THE sunny weather has brought out all our bowlers, with the annual Captains versus Presidents Day held on Saturday, with 43 players taking to the greens.
After the recent rains, the greens have had a lot of work put in to them and are bowling very well – congratulations to Laurie Gray, Ken Pay and new staff member Mick Pors for their efforts in bringing the greens up to the excellent standard they were on the weekend.
On Saturday, the Captain’s team won again, this time with five rinks winning to one and a massive 57 shots. Maybe, it is time the President helped with selection to see if he can change the result in his favour.
The best winning rink for the Captain’s team was Bryce McLeish, Jim Richards and Stuart Robinson with a massive 22 shot win.
For the President, the Graeme Hayes led rink of Jim McLeish, Mick Pors and Alan Hird were their only winner. Chocolates were awarded to two teams, one which included the “old” shoe salesman. Congratulations to the Captain’s team – well played.
On Thursday, 23 players attended our regular Thursday Bowls. Only one pair was needed to compete against the all the other triples combinations and with the advantage of bowling three bowls each end came out on top.
The winning pair was Noel Robertson and visitor Shane Hafner, who won both games and finished with 20 shots up. It was great to see Shane back in town, catching up with all his friends from his time in Kerang.
Runners up were Frank Ritchie, Rosie Laughlin and Carol Pay, also with two wins, but only 16 shots up. The “chocolates” were won by Joyce Tuohey, Ray Maddox and Trevor Linton. There were some “notable” wrong bias bowls delivered during the afternoon, with the retired panel beater being responsible for one of them.
With the Pennant season now upon us, Social Bowls will be held every Thursday, with a 12.45pm registration for a 1pm start, everyone is welcome.
As mentioned earlier, Pennant starts this week, with the Midweek team playing at home tomorrow against Barham 3. The team is Judy McKerrow (s), Joyce Tuohey, Rosie Laughlin and Lorraine Douglass and Team 2 is Lorraine Ritchie (s), Sonia McLeish, Marlene Rawson and Allison Medson. Good luck to all teams.
The Saturday Pennant teams will be selected tonight (Tuesday) and circulated to members via SMS.
Congratulations are in order for Lorraine Ritchie and Allison Medson who have been selected to represent the Northern district Playing area in a Round Robin at Murray downs in early November.
On Sunday, the club hosted the Men’s and Ladies State Pairs Qualifying event. Bowlers were delighted with the presentation of the greens and hospitality. At the end of the Men’s Sectional play, our own Frank Ritchie and Lloyd Murray have advanced to the final against Brian Bowles and Wayne Brooks from Cohuna, who won their section. This match will be played at Kerang Golf next Sunday commencing at 9.30am. In the Ladies, the winners were Jean Fairchild and Jenny Laursen.
Twilight Triples is programmed to commence on Wednesday, October 12. Expressions of interest in playing are now being sought. If you would like to play, please contact Aldo 0407 310 762 or Jim McLeish 0429 346 418 to enter either as a single or team entry.
Our first tournament is the Peg Coad Day on Thursday, October 27. This is a three bowl triples any combination day, with the only proviso that ladies must skip. Start time is 12 noon and afternoon tea is provided. Entries can be forwarded to Judy McKerrow 0427 638 717.
