Planting the town green

SWAN Hill Neighbourhood House is keen to turn the town green with their upcoming Mallee Urban Greening event on May 15.

Guest speaker Dr Greg Moore, former principal of the University of Melbourne’s Burnley College, has a particular interest in arboriculture and will be on hand to offer his guidance on all things trees.

Those in the first 50 to register for the Sustainable Gardening Australia session focused on Cooling our patch – gardeners’ role in urban greening and cooling will also receive two free native trees and a 15 metre hose.

Neighbourhood House manager Sarina Kelly said that the native plants were being specially selected to suit urban backyards and to be resilient in our climate.

“Everyone is welcome to attend and learn about the importance of planting and caring for native shade trees in a warming climate,” she said.

“We are very grateful and excited to welcome Dr Moore.”

The workshop from Dr Moore will include afternoon tea and has been put on in partnership with the Swan Hill Rural City Council, who received funding from the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing.

Members of the public may know Dr Moore from his regular segment with Jacinta Parsons on ABC Radio.

He has served the board of Greening Australia for 24 years, has written three books, seven book chapters and published more than 200 scientific papers and articles.

He was awarded an OAM in 2017 for services to the environment, particularly arboriculture.
