THE footy is done and dusted and that means that cricket, tennis and other summer sports are about to commence.
Funny, but haven’t seen a draw for any summer sport as yet. What’s going on?
THE Australian cricket team have just knocked over the Poms in the ODI and will now face Pakistan in November, then India in the usual five-match Test series in Australia.
The Boxing Day Test is still at the MCG, despite some wanting to grab it from us.
THE Kerang Turf Club December meeting will take place on Saturday, December 28 this year. That will be the perfect time for the traditional brilliant social day put on by the Turf Club.
Pretty sure that Tom Nisbett , Colleen Shay, Greg McNeil and the usual crew will make the day the best it can possibly be.
SPEAKING of Summer sport, that young fella Russel Bott travelled up to Cairns or Mackay to play in Australia’s national over 60 competition.
Someone once said to Kurl regarding giving up sport, that you are a long time out of it. That’s probably not the case with Botty. He’s been a long time in it. Good on you Russ, hope you got a hit and made a few.
BELIEVE there was a local school reunion recently for a class of the early 60’s in Kerang. It was Bruce Laity’s class from way back then and they would have had an excellent get-together.
SPEAKING of reunions, Kurl attended a school reunion for the East Loddon School a few weeks ago. There were lots of folk that weren’t remembered and if someone hadn’t said “that’s such and such” you’d never have guessed. Once you have a few words, it’s like those 50 years just disappeared.
It’s great to realise that everyone from that class has turned out to have a successful life.
One “almost” local bloke who lives between Boort and Quamby that Kurl had no idea was in the area is Ian Collins. Ian once lived on the Calivil mail road but is now busy on the farm out that way.
One bloke and his wife made the trek from Darwin. Yep, it’s always great to catch up.
RAN into young Barry Stewart at Mates’ over in Koondrook the other evening. He was at his usual spot at the bar and, of course we were talking a bit of fishing and then cricket and footy as well.
Some of the older readers may remember Barry’s father Ron “Abner” Stewart who was Kurl’s junior footy coach at Yarrawalla many years ago. Ron played at Pyramid Hill but was then recruited to Yarrawalla and was lucky enough to play in a flag or two with the ‘Walla.
I could go on, but it was great to have a chat Baz.
WHILE talking about old sportsmen, I caught up with Max Gray prior to the AFL finals where Geelong defeated Port Adelaide in the Qualifying Final.
Being a keen Cats supporter, Max was a bit concerned about the Geelong small forwards, hoping that they could produce the goods. As it turned out they did exactly that and were the difference in the big win. I remember saying at the time that Carlton could do with all three of Geelong’s small forwards.
Max was another former Yarrawalla footballer and cricketer.
JUST been up north for a week to see family. One of the best things that you can see in this world is a smile from your grandkids. Can never get enough of that.
THOUGHT that it was time to mention another workmate, in Christine Hildenhagen. Christine is an ad rep in Cohuna and Barham Koondrook as well as Swan Hill. Yep, she’s usually quite busy and as yours truly was away last week, she was probably busier.
Christine has recently moved from Kerang to Barham with her three boys and of course partner Leighton. Hope you are all loving the quiet life in the border town. Also hope that someone from the local cricket club will get Leighton playing.
