ENTRIES were down, but the level of tennis on display made up for it at Cohuna’s annual Easter tournament.
The club’s Mary Rodwell said the weather was warm for tennis for the first three days, with the club starting events earlier on Monday to try and beat the rain, and just managing to get all events finished.
“The courts were also in good condition, after being badly damaged by corellas around Christmas time,” she said.
“The back bay has been resurfaced and most of these courts have better grass cover, thanks to much hard work by club members.”
Rodwell said entries were down a little on last year, with COVID cases to blame.
There were entries from Melbourne, Geelong, Swan Hill and surrounding areas, as well as locals.
“There was some very high quality tennis over the weekend with the men’s open winner, Ryan Lange, taken to three sets in the final,” Rodwell said.
Several locals also won events this year.
“Club members, their families and parents of junior members, as well as local community members, are to be congratulated for helping out when asked to ensure that all areas of the tournament ran smoothly,” Rodwell said.
“Whether it was food supplied, helping in the kitchen, on Sunday night for the dinner or in many other ways, thank you very much.”
Off the court, the presentation of trophies and meal on Sunday night, which catered for over 150 people, was a highlight thoroughly enjoyed by the visitors.
The presentations were again held on the hard court, with a special presentation of a life membership to Owen McLoughlan.
“The large number of entries is not only good for the club but also for the town in general, because the round robin format allows players to organise to do other things around the town when they are not playing,” Rodwell said.
Profits from this year’s tournament will help with running costs and improvements around the club.
