Boxing Day racing set to shine

THE forecast is good for a relaxed day at Kerang’s Boxing Day Races on Thursday.

Last year, extreme heat triggered an early start to racing, but with a predicted temperature in the mid 30s this year, conditions should be fine on both the track and lush lawns of Alexandra Park.

Six races will be run at the meeting, with the fields set to be finalised on Sunday.

Young up-and-coming race-caller, Patrick Doyle from Cohuna, will again call a race at the meet, under the tutelage of his racing.com mentor, Rick McIntosh.

There will be live acoustic music and free kids’ activities on offer at the event.

Mini marquee and umbrella packages will be available and food and beverages will include Brown Brothers wines.

Kerang Turf Club president Scott Strachan described the race day as a good chance to catch-up with friends.

“A lot of people are back in town to visit family and it’s a good opportunity to catch up with people you might only see once a year,” he said.

Mr Strachan said the track and surrounds had once again been well prepared, thanks to the watering regime of ground keeper, Greg McNeil, and the efforts of club volunteers.

“We usually present a pretty good track and we get a good following,” he said.

“It attracts a lot of trainers, knowing they’re going to get a good racing surface.”

The turf club has been focusing on engaging with supporters via social media, and has been receiving a fair bit of attention.

In addition to the state of the track, an impressive new horse-stall precinct at the grounds has drawn appreciative comment from trainers.

Gates open for the Autopro Kerang Boxing Day Races at 11.30am.

The club says there is still time to take out a membership and reap the benefits of reduced race day admission and other offerings next season.
