The University of the Third Age, Kerang and District held its annual Community Concert last week.
The concert combined a mixture of dancing and singing, short stories and a Christmas skit, at a well attended afternoon session at Kerang’s Memorial Hall.
Different branches of the organisation contributed to the performance, including the drama group, The Singing for Fun Choir, and the writing group.
The drama group commenced the show with its Special Dance Troupe performing a ‘knee ballet’, featuring knee-operated puppets, with audience members left wondering the identity of those involved and how they performed the unusual work.
“Their knees were doing all the actions,” the U3A group’s president Edith Lane said.
“Everyone laughed. It was really quite funny.”
Another humorous component of the event was the ‘Curly Christmas Tale’, a modern version of the Three Little Pigs, featuring a confused vegan wolf with limited dining options.
The Circle Dancing group also performed during the afternoon.
“It’s something which has just taken off,” Ms Lane said.
“It’s a bit like a folk dance, but very gentle exercise.”
The club president was delighted with the attendance, which marked the groups 11th annual Community Concert.
“We had more people there than we’ve ever had before,” she said.
The choir’s two sets included famous numbers such as Greensleeves and When a Child is Born.
U3A member Gavin Hardie wrapped up the concert, engaging the audience with an extensive repertoire of country music favourites.
Although U3A stands for University of the Third Age, Ms Lane indicated the university part sounded a little too formal, emphasising the group was about fun and meeting people, while keeping their minds active.
Anyone from the age of 50 years is encouraged to join, with no upper age limit.
“We’ve got some very active 90-year-olds,” Ms Lane said.
U3A Kerang and District offers a variety of activities throughout the week and welcomes new members.
The group’s 2020 program starts on January 10, with a coffee and chat session at the Royal Hotel.
