Students get hands on in hospital

COHUNA Secondary College students have embarked on an innovative nine-week project to address a critical community challenge; the recruitment of healthcare workers and the retention of young people in Cohuna.

The project, conducted in partnership with the Campaspe Cohuna LLEN and the Cohuna District Hospital, offers students a unique hands-on work experience.

Students will take part in group work experience, shadow hospital staff to gain insight into various roles and daily operations within the Cohuna hospital, and develop youth friendly promotional material to highlight career opportunities.

The material will be distributed through local connections, media channels, school newsletters, and social media platforms.

The initiative is part of the students’ Vocational Major Studies, focusing on enhancing literacy, numeracy, personal development, and work-related skills.

Campaspe Cohuna LLEN project officer, Debbie Rogerson said the benefits of the project were reciprocal.

“This project not only provides our students with valuable real-world experience but also supports our local healthcare system by promoting career opportunities in the community,” she said.

“A key component of the project involves community engagement.

“Students collaborated with staff from Northern District Community Health to conduct a survey assessing community awareness of hospital careers.

“The survey, which can be found on Facebook, the school newsletter, shop fronts, and community notice boards, offers participants a chance to win one of two $25 vouchers from Kimmy’s Café.”

The feedback gathered from the survey will be instrumental in shaping the students recommendations to the hospital, aiming to improve local healthcare recruitment and retention strategies.
