Angler’s opening haul

LAST weekend’s wet conditions did not stop the Barham Angling Club from holding a Murray cod season opening competition near Murrabit.

Ten members braved the wet conditions, with last year’s champion angler, Darna Fowler dominating proceedings.

Fowler’s haul of six Murray cod included one that reached the 100-centimetre mark, with her five other successes – measuring 56 centimetres, 59 centimetres, 60 centimetres, 74 centimetres and 95 centimetres – ensuing she broke the record for a best weekend catch in the club’s history

Ladies dominated the Murray cod haul, catching 10 of the 11 hauled out of the river during the event. Judy Wilkinson managed to catch 55-centimetre cod, with Heather Delamare also snaring a 56-centimetre cod. Dave Whitehead was the only man in attendance to catch a Murray cod, hauling a 58-centimetre fish out of the water.

Eighteen undersized cod were also caught ranging from 30 to 54 centimetres, with a 40-centimetre yellowbelly, 12 silver perch and five European carp adding to the weekend’s total.

The Baham Angling Club meets on the second Tuesday of each month at cluBarham. New members are welcome, with details available from club president, Garry Wilkinson (0458 276 587).
