Key Cohuna derby clash

ONE of Cohuna’s two Northern District Cricket Association A Grade sides could be entrenched in the top four come tomorrow night.

With fifth-placed Barham/Koondrook taking on second-placed side, Wandella at Koondrook, the winner of tomorrow’s second Cohuna derby of the season between fourth-placed Nondies and third-placed side, Cohuna United will be well placed to play finals come March.

Both sides have won two games so far this season, with United third on the ladder thanks to a three-point buffer.

Last weekend’s draw against Wandella not only helped United secure vital points in the battle for the finals, but the way the club’s bowlers controlled the game will give tomorrow’s visitors inspiration to reverse round two’s six-wicket loss to Nondies.

If Austin Robinson continues his efforts with the ball and Ashley Burke controls play at the top of the order, United could return to the Cohuna Recreation Reserve’s main oval with a third win of the season.

Nondies will have other ideas, and need to rebound following last weekend’s efforts against Leitchville/Gunbower. Sam O’Shea and Josh Treacy have led the way so far this season with the bat, whilst Will Thrum Nondies’ young bowling brigade will look to secure a home win.

Across at Koondrook, Wandella can move to the top of the ladder with a win against Barham/Koondrook.

The border side last played 13 days ago and are yet to produce a win this season, but expect Garry Lolicato and Jaryd Wishart to turn the home side’s fortunes around.

The Bombers were fortunate to return from the Cohuna Recreation Reserve with a weather-enforced draw last weekend, and with Isaac Hogan continuing to lead the way with the bat, are well positioned to lead the competition come 6pm tomorrow.

Top spot up for grabs

NONDIES is set to reclaim top spot on the Northern District Cricket Association B Grade ladder tomorrow.

Last season’s grand finalists are strong favourites to defeat sixth-placed side, Kerang Fairley Town and replace defending premiers, Wandella – which has the bye this weekend – at the head of the competition.

The undefeated Cohuna Recreation Reserve tenants were well positioned to defeat Leitchville/Gunbower last weekend before storms forced the cancellation of play, whilst Kerang Fairley Town had the bye.

Leitchville/Gunbower could also move above Wandella, depending on its performance tomorrow at Leitchville against the Wandella Warriors.

The Warriors are 10 points off fourth-placed side, Barham/Koondrook, but last weekend’s performance with the ball against Cohuna United will give the side belief it can win a second match of the season.

Meanwhile, the winless Cohuna United will host Barham/Koondrook, which lost to Wandella last weekend.

A United win will still see the side remain seventh on the ladder, whilst the border team can open a considerable gap between fourth and fifth on the ladder, depending on other results.
