Friendships renewed on local dance floor

A LOVE of dancing and catching up with friends from throughout south-eastern Australia attracted people to Kerang at the weekend for a four-day celebration.

The Northern District Dance Club held its four-day event at the Kerang Memorial Hall and its own headquarters continuing a tradition that the club is renowned for.

Close to 80 people joined in the celebrations during the opening night of dancing at Kerang on Friday, with around 110 people in attendance for Saturday night’s ball.

A smaller number gathered for Sunday’s farewell event, before celebrations moved to the association’s hall last night.

Each event featured many traditional dances, ranging from Foxtrots, Evening Three Steps, Waltzes, Prides of Erin and Quicksteps.

This year’s event attracted couples who have been visiting the area for more than 40 years through to those participating for the first time.

“The dance weekend attracts people each year, as all who attend like to enjoy each other’s company and they all have a similar interest,” dance association treasurer, Desiree Hebb said.

The club’s two major annual awards – the Star and Beau of the Ball – were presented on Saturday night, with judges, Helen and Peter Euman given the task of selecting the worthy recipients.

As in past years, the way each person danced and their attire led to the judges’ decision, with Cobram’s Pam Storer awarded the Star of the Ball title and South Australian resident, Jim Bastian received the Beau of the Ball accolade.

“The camaraderie and friendships made whilst taking part in dance balls is fantastic. You meet people from throughout Australia at each event,” Ms Storer said.

“You just run into someone you know at any event, no matter where you go, and you are certainly made to feel welcome.”
