Shade shelter

KERANG South Primary School staff and students will benefit from State Government funding to improve shaded area options.

The school received $24,562 from the government’s School Shade Grants program to upgrade two current structures and to provide more undercover options on-site.

The majority of the funds will be used to erect a shade structure between two portable classrooms at the back of the school.

The new area will enable greater space for children to eat lunch in the shade and for outdoor classes.

“We would like to put tables and chairs in this area, but you can’t put the children in the area as it gets too hot in summer,” school principal, Lyn Veall said.

A portion of the funds will be used to upgrade shade structures that protect the school’s two playgrounds from sunlight after recent Department of Education and Early Childhood Development compliance checks found that the two shades needed to be replaced.

“The district suffers from high UV levels, so the structure upgrades will mean we are 100 per cent compliant,” Mrs Veall said.

The Schools Shade Grant Program is complemented by the Community Shade Grant Program which provides grants for shade in community settings such as parks, sports clubs and playgrounds.

Schools can apply for the second round of the program’s funding online.
