Reality is a bowl of rice

LOCAL primary school students received a taste of reality during an annual event last week.

Seven St Joseph’s Primary School students and one teacher shared pizza, chips and soft drink as the remainder of the school’s population ate a bowl of rice each during the school’s Reality Meal.

Now an annual tradition, the event aims to show students how the majority of the world lives.

“We’re considered rich as we have a bed to sleep on, a toilet and running water,” grade six student, Elly Spencer said.

“The day helps us to experience what it is to live the life of 80 per cent of people,” fellow grade six student, Charlotte Oliver said.

As part of the annual practical lesson, each class cooked up enough rice for one bowl each prior to the lunch break.

Students gathered outside where the grade six students each pulled out a name of a year level representative that would enjoy the smorgasbord.

A staff member was also randomly selected to enjoy the experience, whilst those not selected had to sit around and eat their bowl of rice.
