McKerrow new president of Lions Club Kerang

THE Lions Club of Kerang has appointed Judy McKerrow as its new president.

Ms McKerrow has been an active member of Lions since 1994 when she joined the Lake Charm/Mystic Park Lions Club, and was an active member until its closure in 2018.

The role of president is not new to Ms McKerrow. She has held the position, along with others, including district governor for the 201V6 district running from Balranald to Corryong taking in 55 clubs on both sides of the Murray River.

Over the last 12 months the 22 members of the Kerang Lions Club have donated $6800 to the community which has been raised by the volunteers catering for events, maintaining the Ibis Rookery Visitors Centre on behalf of Gannawarra Council, and manning the gates for football and turf clubs.

It’s not all about fund raising, there are other community projects the Lions undertake. Ms McKerrow said the junior public speaking project is one that they encourage local school students to be involved in.

“The school usually selects three or four students from grades three and four, and grades five and six, and we go along and do the judging,” she said.

“We pick out the ones we think are the best, along with the runner-up which is often difficult to do.

“Recently the four schools from Kerang competed in the club final and they go onto the next level.

“It gives the kids a big confidence boost, we didn’t have anything like that when we went to school.”

Kerang Lions Club would like to encourage more people to become involved with the organisation that has been active in the community since 1968.
