Murray River flooding forecast

THE Murray River could experience flooding into late November, Victoria’s Emergency Management Commissioner has warned.

Andrew Crisp told ABC Radio on Monday morning that floodwaters were moving “quickly towards the Murray” and that it would work its way along the Murray River over the next four to six weeks.

A major flood warning has been issues for the Murray downstream of Tocumwal to Barham.

The Murray River at Torrumbarry Weir may reach around 7.85 metres about October 24-29, with major flooding. This would be higher than the January 1974 flood.

The Murray River at Barham may reach 6.2m in the last week of October, with major flooding. This would be higher than the October 1993 and 2016 floods.

Authorities are warning major flooding, similar to or exceeding the 1993 flood, was possible at Echuca and Moama from the middle of this week.

Koondrook residents were sandbagging homes in low-lying areas and the Koondrook Primary School.

Forecasts for Swan Hill and downstream along the Murray River will be refined once there is more certainty in the expected peak at Echuca Wharf.

Flood operations are being conducted by the Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) at Hume Dam to manage inflows from the upper Murray, Mitta Mitta River and other tributaries.

MDBA is working closely with the Bureau and WaterNSW to plan release strategies.
