Spreading cheer

PERFECT weather conditions blessed the Gannawarra Memorial Toy Run on Saturday after the horrific code red conditions on Thursday. A huge turnout of motorcyclists and drivers showed off their vehicles, revelling in the social and festive atmosphere, while giving generously to local communities.

The convoys of bikes and cars made a spectacular sight and an equally impressive sound.

One of the toy run’s organisers, councillor Mark Arians described it as “hugely successful”, thanking the efforts of the committee and all the supporters of the event.

“It was the biggest one to date with around 140 bikes and 70 cars,” Cr Arians said.

“Just the nomination fees came in at around $8000. But on top of that will come the catering and the merchandising (money raised).”

The money will go to providing hampers for nominated community members, organised by the combined churches of the region.

“They support local businesses when they’re doing that,” Cr Arians said.

That is on top of the influx of patrons in cafes and other businesses along the toy run’s route.

While some participants commenced their day’s adventure in Leitchville, others joined in Kerang, with Murrabit, Barham and Cohuna locals all enjoying a visit and the chance to see a spectacular array of vehicles.

The route was 150 kilometres long.

Cr Arians estimated the donations of toys also amounted to about $8000.

The Gannawarra Memorial Toy Run commemorates former local riders Jed Ferris, who passed away in a motorbike accident, and Paul Webb who suggested the event, but sadly didn’t live to see it come to fruition.

This year was the fifth edition of the toy run.
