Mixed bag for Cohuna Bowls Club

Cohuna

A mixed bag for Cohuna Bowls Club with one win, one draw and one loss.

Cohuna was host to Kerang Golf and went down by 15 shots with two rinks up and a bad loss.

Jeff Reade played L. Murray and got up by 6 shots, with Jeff being in front all day.

P. VanderZande played Frank Ritchie and, winning 15 ends, set up an 11 shots win.

Brian Bowles had one of those days when the opposition was too good, and that was A. Jeffes and his team saluting the judge by 32 shots up, keeping Brian to six ends. Everyone has had one of those days.

Division Two played our neighbours in Cohuna Golf, winning two rinks and losing one.

Frank Bagg turned it around, winning by 15 shots against Y. Eckhardt. He was down on the 17th end, then in four ends picked up 15 shots.

Wally Henery had a real battle against Bruce Morrison, winning by two shots.

Dianne Manners played Peter Bibby and was well down early, but winning ends in the later stages helped, eventually going down by four shots.

In every rink the last three ends, Cohuna won the premiership ends.

Division Two got out of jail and ended up with a draw.

Marg Mooney struck the in-form Phil Mertz, who took heaps of shots off our rink, but winning the last end picking up a four, helped the other two rinks, finally going down by nine shots.

Nathan’s ‘awesome’ was in more trouble than Custers last stand. On the 17th end he was trailing by 16 shots, but by picking up 15 shots over the last five ends with a six on the last end, secured a draw which we will take.

Greg Beck showed no mercy, winning by 10 shots against R. Hosking and with the painter, Norm, and Sir Reg, also contributing.

Noddy Hosking won the Union Socks. My gripe is not too many bowlers put their names in for the singles.

Jackpot is now $110. The honourable Keith Foreman told me to give a plug for the Hams coming up at Leitchville Golf and Cohuna.

Also Keith is happy he won the raffle.

Cohuna Golf

Despite a host of counter-attractions, the Cohuna Golf ladies Tuesday bowls attracted a terrific attendance for matches in near perfect conditions.

Gwen Campbell skipped the best rink, helped by Jan Heap and Deanne Ladson. Great to see this comp proceeding so well.

Wednesday night bowls saw a record of 12 bowlers available off the bank, ensuring all games were played out.

Winners on the night were Mal Appleby, Alan Cooke and Paul Robinson.

Terrific to see our golf green-keeper at bowls. He’s got a bright future here as well as chasing the little white ball.

Barb Barry is the duty team this week.

Club Championships are reaching the interesting stage, with just four contenders left.

Jarred Hammond plays Frank Trezise, while John Keely meets Bluey Fletcher. Too hard to pick the eventual winner.

The pairs are down to eight, no guesses here either.

Pennant results were disappointing to say the least, with very few rinks gaining points.

Division One travelled to our historical graveyard at Gunbower, and once again got turned over. Jarred a win and James a draw were the best performed on the day.

The Whites met Cohuna in town and went shot for shot most of the day, until the home side drew away late in the game.

Peter Bibby gained two points by defeating Di Manners, Bruce went close, only two down, while Yvonne’s rink fell right away in the second half to lose by 15.

The Bower vouchers went to Peter, Bill Waters, Rhonda Bibby and Bernie Mawson.

The Navy combination got a rude awakening when they travelled to Barham Sports, with a blank canvas as far as points were concerned.

Greg Mathers did best, losing by just one in an overall defeat by ten shots. No disaster, but a necessary wake-up call perhaps.

No Division Three, but back in business this week we hope with a few more players available.

On the social side, members have one last chance to join our pre-Christmas luncheon at the Gunbower Hotel on December 1, see Mick for inclusion.

Numbers from our club for the start of the night hams series are great, hopefully neighbouring clubs can match our entries.

Our Classic Fours on December 8 is full at this stage, all we need is a quartet of players to standby in case of a non-attending team. Names to Peter please.

Well done to Bluey, John Brown and Frank on a great win at the Gunbower Triples. Cohuna Golf to the fore again.
