Street works continue

WORKS to transform one of Kerang’s main streets into a shared zone have entered the final stage.

A crane was called in on Friday morning to place concrete footings near the Kerang Court House, marking the start of the third stage of works for the Victoria Street upgrade.

The $750,000 project is part of an overall multi-stage plan to enhance the commercial area and to upgrade linkages from the railway station through the shopping centre to the highway entrance and Atkinson Park.

The new precinct, funded through a $500,000 State Government contribution, will feature a shared zone which gives priority to pedestrians over vehicles, as well as custom timber bench seats, grassed elevated pods and in-ground lighting.

Work began in early June, with the street closed to traffic until mid-September to enable road works to proceed.

The second stage of the project is ongoing, with the laying of new pavers along the western section of Victoria Street completed at the weekend.

In-ground lights are still to be installed, with the wall foundations for the raised garden and grass pods to still be prepared.

Attention is also turning to the eastern side of the street, where similar pods will be located.

A new ramp connecting the pavement to the court house will be constructed in the coming weeks, after which excavation of the remaining pavers can begin.
