Flood guides launched

THE Kerang State Emergency Service launched the Kerang and Quambatook Local Flood Guide booklets last Thursday with a demonstration of its skills.

The guides, the product of a collaboration between the Gannawarra Shire Council, State Government, SES and the North Central Catchment Management Authority, provides information about preparing for and handling floods.Kerang is on the Loddon River floodplain and is susceptible to flooding.

During the demonstration SES volunteers and Kerang Fire Brigade members showed residents how they rescue a road accident victim by cutting them out of a car.

SES voluntary support officer, Jason Conrad said the organisation also hoped to use the day to create awareness in the community of what they do as they are in dire need of volunteers.

Community resilience officer, Gavin Quinn said that recruitment drives were being considered across the local area to expand the Kerang unit and increase community inclusivity.

“Expanding and growing the unit so the same few people aren’t being called on all the time is the next step,” he said.

Copies of the flood guides can be picked up at the Kerang and District Community Centre and Quambatook Community Resource Centre.
