COOLER than usual growing conditions did not stop orchid enthusiasts from showcasing their talents during an annual floral celebration, held at the weekend.
Twenty of the Mid Murray Orchid Club’s 32 members entered displays at the club’s annual show, held on Saturday and Sunday at the Kerang Memorial Hall.
Although entry numbers for both displays and floral art competitions were down, good crowd numbers ensured the event was a success.
“We received a good number of entries, but numbers were down as due to the conditions, some people have not been able to get their orchids open up in time for the show,” club president, Graeme Oram said.
“We had good numbers turn up on Saturday, but Sunday is usually a quieter day.”
Those who visited the show admired the members’ displays, which incorporated themes ranging from art to machinery.
Numerous floral arrangement entries attracted attention, whilst the photographic competition highlighted the talents of residents from throughout the area.
Members ran potting and gardening demonstrations on both days, whilst the plant sale was a success with most stock sold by Saturday afternoon.
“All members provide plants for the sale, with the club receiving a commission,” Mr Oram said.
“We had a couple of ladies say to us how helpful the demonstrations are. Last year they learnt how to pot and grow orchids, and they have two growing this year.”
