KERANG South Primary School Grade 5-6 students have enjoyed river walks, golf, cyber safety and healthy eating sessions to learn the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
The school has partnered with Mallee Sports Assembly Wycheproof project officer Rhonda Allan to conduct the Active Youth program as part of the VicHealth Future Healthy initiative which aims to encourage youth to participate in regular physical activities and make positive life choices.
The community has contributed to facilitating this program, with Victoria Police Leading Senior Constable Andrew Downes and health promotion officers from Northern District Community Health Kerang Rachel Clark and Sourav Jain running information sessions and Kerang Golf Club volunteers Tony Laughlin, Phil Lloyd and Meryl Cameron tutoring students in golf basics.
The program is divided into two sessions each week for four weeks, of which students have completed half so far.
The first week consisted of a walk along Loddon River in Kerang during which students undertook Outdoor Alphabet and Nature Walk scavenger hunts and a Cyber Safety session with Sen Const Downes, who spoke to the students about being safe online and being nice to each other.
The second week took the students out to Kerang Golf Club to learn putting, chipping and driving.
They were invited back by the volunteers to take up the sport, followed up by a session on healthy eating in which students experienced vegetables using all five senses and learned the importance of drinking water so their bodies could function properly.
