CMFNL – Day for recruits

KEY recruits from three district clubs helped their sides open the 2017 Central Murray Football Netball League season in positive fashion.

The Cohuna Kangas, five-time defending premiers, Kerang and Koondrook/Barham all sit in the top five following the opening round of action.

The Kangas sit on top of the ladder following a 57-point win against Balranald, with new forward, Brett Collins leading the way with six goals.

The former Macorna spearhead was dominant for the home team, which set up the win thanks to a seven-goal to one third quarter.

Harrison Keely chipped in with four goals of his own, with Kangas ruckman, Christopher Anderson the best player on the ground.

Across at Kerang, the Blues defeated Woorinen by 14 points in what was the largest winning margin in the past five meetings between the sides in games held at Riverside Park.

Kerang fought back from a three-point deficit at the main break to help cap off its 2016 premiership celebrations, with former NT Thunder defender, Patrick Taban kicking three goals for the victors.

Brandon Hayes and Marty Kelly – who played his first match with the Blues following stints with the Mallee Eagles and Kangaroo Flat – amongst the best players.

Meanwhile, Dean Limbach kicked six goals in his first outing for Koondrook/Barham as the Raiders defeated Tooleybuc/Manangatang by seven points.

A six-goal to two second term turned the game the Raiders’ way, with Marc O’Neill and Troy Rogers standing out for the hosts.
