RACEGOERS will be able to take advantage of the AFL Grand Final Eve public holiday, with Gunbower’s annual cup meet occurring later this month.
The Gunbower Racing Club and Country Racing Victoria have approved for the meet to occur as a one-off on Friday, September 30 at the Gunbower Racecourse.
Organisers of the initiative hope the change of date will entice a large crowd to the meet to watch the feature race, the 1800-metre Procal Dairies Gunbower Gold Cup, and avoid a clash with the AFL Grand Final for a second year.
“As it’s a public holiday, we hope people will be able to attend the races on the Friday and watch the grand final at home or at other events on the Saturday,” racing club president, Gary Spittal said.
“We may also be able to entice people coming through the area for the Deni Ute Muster to visit.”
There will be plenty to do off-course, with the Fashions on the Field competition to be a highlight.
Children’s attractions will be on offer, with former St Kilda player, Justin Koschitzke to also be in attendance.
The turf club hopes the 2001 Rising Star winner will be able to assist with a football clinic for all youngsters in attendance.
A free bus service will also operate to take patrons from Kerang at 11am, followed by Koondrook at 11.30am, Cohuna by 12 noon and Leitchville to the event. Bookings are essential, which can be completed by phoning Adrian on 0400 370 322.
Bookings for umbrella and marquee packages can be made by visiting the club’s website.
