Kerang Golf
A FIRST for Kerang Golf in the Northern Valley competition with a night match against Barham last Friday evening.
After a sausage sizzle the game began at 6.15 pm and a good crowd also came along to watch.
It was also “live streamed” and was viewed by plenty of people from the comfort of their lounge room.
After a good start, Kerang Golf were on level terms after the first 10 ends and a close game was in the offing.
However, Barham, on their home green slowly opened up a margin on two rinks and even though the scores don’t really tell the story, the Barham team held a lead to the finish.
For Golf, Frank Ritchie’s team bowled extremely well all night to register a three shot victory over Mark Quor, after leading by as many as 13 shots during the game.
Ritchie Murray’s team was within striking distance at the halfway mark, only to lose a couple of numbers late in the game to go down by 12 shots. Dallas Mathers had a tough evening against Kane Wilson, although a fightback late in the game was to no avail as Barham saluted won by 14 shots.
Division 2 were at home against Kerang 3 and came away with a comprehensive win, with all rinks on top.
Best was Greg Beck with 16 shots up, followed by Graeme Hayes with 12 up. Laurie Gray’s team had a close game against Helen McBain to win the last two ends and finish two in front. Well done to this team, with two wins from three games – a great start to the season.
Division 3 also played at home, and again against neighbours Kerang 4.
With “stand-in” skipper Jeff Anderson, replacing the in-form Noel Robertson (who was fishing), leading the way the team had a two rink to one win and this rink (Jeff, Rob “Curly” Curtis, Bernie Beck and Stuart Robinson) won the Royal Hotel vouchers with a 16 shot win.
Not to be outdone, Gary Borg’s team returned to form with a solid five shot margin and these wins covered Judy McKerrow’s team who had a tough day. Two wins from the first three games as well, sees this team well positioned early in the season.
Both Midweek teams travelled to Barham to play and in Division 1, Barham outplayed our team on all rinks to win comfortably.
The closest result was the Lloyd Murray rink going down by five shots, Jim McLeish lost by seven and Lorraine Ritchie was 12 shots in arrears. Division 2 was a different story. Also playing against Barham, Dave Randell’s rink had a strong win by 11 shots and covered Marlene Rawson’s loss by seven for an overall four shot win – 39/35.
Claire Spinks Memorial Day, sponsored by Dale Spinks and family was played last Thursday in windy conditions.
Thanks to all the teams that turned up, especially those from outside our playing area – Boort and Calivil.
After three games of three bowl triples, there was only one combination that won all their games.
Congratulations to Helen McBain, Judy Hipwell and Barb Williams our kindred club, Kerang on their win.
In the runners-up position, with two wins and 55 points, was Som Pascoe, Jenny Harrison and Alyne Fagg, also from Kerang.
The best last game winner was the Joycey Tuohey rink with Robert “Fonzy” Taylor and Lorraine Douglass who scored 26 points, with the bowl of the day by Joycey to convert a one down to three up with her very last bowl.
The lucky card draw recipients were Allison Ainger (Cohuna) won the lucky lead, Mick Pors (2nd) and Carol Pay (skip) with the spiders going to lead – Alyne Fagg, Second – Phyl Baker (Boort) and Skip to Jelen McBain.
A sumptuous afternoon tea was served after bowls and thoroughly enjoyed by all the participants.
Night 2 of the Twilight Triples was played in cooler conditions and the winners were The Golfers – must have been Karyl Hewitt’s inclusion in the team that inspired this result.
Team mates, husband Captain Jack and Phil Lloyd were the recipients of the Choice Cut Butchers for the night. Runners-Up were the Eagles 44, also on 31 points but not quite enough shots up. Haye’s Real Estate also scored 31 points, to finish in third place. Chocolates shared by Rotary, Betta Electrical and Gray Wilson.
The ladder sees The Golfers on top with 60 points, followed by Taylor Ashton Painting, Eagles 44 and Hayes Real Estate, all on 58.
Congratulations to Frank and Lorraine Ritchie who have both been selected to represent NDPA in the Round Robin at Murray Downs on Sunday, November 3.
The Terry White Chemist Triples is getting closer, with entries coming in slowly. Thursday, November 7 is the day, with a 12.30 pm start and casual dress. Enter with Aldo (0407 310762) or Frank Ritchie (0409 439029)
The Men’s Club Championship draw has been done and there are some games to be played soon. Please get these games organised, as the “play by” dates will be strictly enforced.
Entries for the other events are still being accepted – see the sheets on the noticeboard.
Congratulations to Brody Harker and Mark Quor, both from Barham, who have qualified to play in the final of the NDPA State Singles, after the preliminary rounds were played at Kerang Golf on Sunday. The final will be played on Sunday, November 10, at Kerang Golf at 9.30 am.
Cohuna Golf
SOCIAL bowls began the week, with the ladies enjoying much warmer conditions as summer approaches.
The best performed triple team was that of Joan Atkinson, Kath Westblade and Yvonne Eckhardt.
A reminder that on Tuesday week bowls will begin at 11 am, followed by a light luncheon and cup activities.
All to contribute please to the catering.
Morning bowls will begin officially on the 19th, after a week’s spell due to the Northern Carnival.
Midweek pennant was one of those “nearly got there” days, with our Ones just failing to overhaul Cohuna over the last couple of ends, going down by a single shot.
Peter Bibby’s rink up by nine to claim Kimmy’s vouchers, teams Eckhardt and Trezise both down by five.
Ian Morrison kept his unbeaten record intact in the Twos, albeit with a draw, but Cheryle’s loss by nine meant a Barham victory by that amount.
Both sides should bounce back this week.
Wednesday night bowls saw 36 new and seasoned bowlers compete for the first points scoring outing of the year.
Best on the night were Matty Heap, Jordan Simpson and Alison Murphy, the latter pair first starters and showing real talent.
They sneaked ahead on a countback from Dave McNamara, Winko McLoughlan and Thomas McKenzie.
Thursday pairs continues to attract bowlers from far and wide, with Cohuna guests featuring prominently this week.
Winners were Ken Hocking and Col Anderson, with repechage prize-money to Mal Hogan and Cheryle Baker.
The popular Kimmy’s vouchers went to the pairing of Ian Morrison and Gayle Anderson.
Pennant teams didn’t have far to travel on Saturday, with two sides at home, and the other two in at Cohuna.
Results could not have been better, all teams registering victories.
In the Northern Valley comp we hosted Racecourse from Swan Hill, and were able to keep well ahead on all three rinks, although Jarred’s generosity in gifting Glen McIntosh an elusive eight count raised a few eyebrows.
All players are contributing evenly, with a big year in the offing.
Our Ones met Cohuna on a very slippery green, but showed the value of the draw bowling practise with a top win.
Peter home by 13 against Ian Howard, Gary Easton ahead of Wayne Brooks by three, and Pat, whose rink made up tons of last ground, down to Frank Tonn by five.
Along side the Twos had a super battle all day, with scores being tallied regularly over the final few ends.
At match end the boards showed Golf ahead overall by just one shot.
Des Keely remains unbeaten, home by three, Malcolm by two with Greg down by four.
Des, Linda, Mary and Bill Waters deservedly scored the Bower meal vouchers for their game.
Gunny Golf reached position one on the ladder with a top win over a Barham side.
Although Lyle went down by a few, solid wins to “Scruffy” Musgrove and Alan Porter carried the day, much to everyone’s delight, especially their organiser Tucker.
Club members playing in the Division 60 and over pairs are well on track to win their respective events, being one match away in their sections.
Good luck on Thursday to Gwen and Yvonne, Ron and Mick when they line up again at Barham.

Leitchville
LAST Saturday our trips to Gunbower and Pyramid Hill saw Division 1 going down by five shots and Division 3 going down by eight shots. A good effort considering we were once again short on manpower but at least we put teams on the grass.
In Division 1 Kevin Dehne lost -17, Mal Irvine won +6 and Tony Cantwell’s team won +6.
Division 3 was much the same going down by eight shots. Laurie Crawford’s team was down by one shot, Greg Goulding lost by 14 and Geoff Brown’s team won by seven shots. Thanks to all those who filled in.
This week’s teams are as follows:

Kerang
THE Social Black Duck Triples was held on a delightful if not gusty day with 24 players taking part, of which we had a winning conglomerate in Som Pascoe, David King and Graeme Morris on +7.Largest margin in the second game was Kevin Teasdale, H Pendlebury and Ron Cornwill with +10.
The jackpot was once again claimed without a chance of getting off the $60 starting purse. It was claimed by Ian Hastie, Peter Waters and Marlene Orr. It will remain at $60 for now.
In the Northern Valley competition, Kerang hosted the Murray Downs combination and held on to win by two shots in a match that went down to the last bowl.
Team Lunghusen and Team Hancock went down narrowly by three and four shots with Team Wilson carrying the day with a nine-shot rink win. The win has Kerang sitting second on the ladder.
Division 1 had Kerang welcoming Barham 3 in what proved to be similar to the NV game. A one-shot win was the verdict with Heinsy not needed to play the last bowl.
Team Brown went down swinging and Team Hein got up by 1. Team Pay came to the rescue to claim victory by 11 shots and carry the day winning overall by a solitary shot. Kerang now sits in second spot two points off top.
In Division 2, Kerang met Kerang Golf on their turf and were found wanting, going down collectively by 30 shots with Team McBain being beaten by two shots with the other two rinks going down by double digits, Fowler by 16 and Adams by 12. Kerang are holding the ladder up in this division with a little bit in front of them.
Division 3 had Kerang being hosted by Kerang Golf also and the result was the same with our mob going down nine shots overall with Team King being the best-performed rink through a victory by 14 shots.
Team Rosewall battled hard for a five-shot loss with Team Marshall dealt an 18-shot defeat. Kerang now sit just under a game outside the top four.
After play there was a barbecue put on by a couple of our members in Fatty and Browny which was accepted quite well by all and sundry.
The Murray Downs boys enjoyed the hospitality with the rest of the crowd. There will be another night like this coming up but details weren’t at hand at this time.
The raffles were won by Rex Howard and Mick Hollingsworth (both Murray Downs) and Alyne Fagg will be enjoying a chop or two on the barbecue when the nights get a little balmier.
Melbourne Cup day bowls will be next Tuesday and will replace Black Duck. We had a couple of birthdays during the week with Kim Watts turning 70 and Murray Sutherland a spritely 87. On the other side of the coin, we had some bad news with one of our friends in Ray Tayler passing away and Dean Blunt not very well at the moment.
Congratulations to our members both new and not so in Adrian Bates, Brian Bowles, Jason Lunghusen, Kevin Teasdale and Jason Wilson, who were selected in the NDPA interleague team to play at the Murray Mallee round robin.
I made mention of Kevin Teasdale and Trevor Pocock winning the State Pairs again last week. The next step is regionals to be held at Murray Downs. Good bowling gents!
State Singles were held out at Kerang Golf Sunday with three of our Pennant players representing us in Som Pascoe, Adrian Bates and Mark Hamon taking part. Good bowling to our players.
Ladies club semi-finals to be held Thursday 10am. Good luck ladies.
