Across the Greens

Cohuna

Once again a brilliant turn-up for social bowls on Tuesday. Twenty-seven players took part in the teams while six men played their triples match.

The greens were running well, but not everyone took advantage.

There were three two-games winners, but the trophies went to Ken (s), Alison, Corale and Gayzie. Well done team.

The catering ladies have been busy and we thank them for a job well done.

The club events are moving along nicely and should be finished in plenty of time. Rick is keeping a keen eye on this.

Well, Saturday was exciting to be able to play a round of Pennant at long last.

Not quite the results we were hoping for but with so many absent the selectors did a fine job just filling teams.

As it was we still needed subs from Pyramid to help us out and we thank all those prepared to do so at short notice.

Pennant results:

Division 1 v Barham 1 – Rick Parr 25/12, Brian Bowles 19/23, Frank Tonn 18/22

Division 2/2 v Cohuna Golf – Rhonda Ballard 22/14, Noddy Hosking 19/18, Bryan Main 12/20

Division 3/3 v Wakool 2 – Steve Clark 11/20, Ann Hipwell 18/22, Norm Walkington 15/17

Division 3/4 v Barham – Maryann Maud 15/21, Terri Hancock 15/31, Ian Dever 17/27

Good luck to those playing in the State Mixed Pairs on Sunday at Leitchville.

Don’t forget to put your names on the lists in the clubhouse for Christmas break-ups. Tuesday, December 13 and Saturday, December 17. This will help with catering.

Congratulations to Frank and Rhonda who won both their games in the State Mixed on Sunday, winning their section. They will now play at a time to be notified.

Well done.

Cohuna Golf

Back to normality this week with all scheduled events taking place, with the exception of mid-week pennant which recommences on Wednesday.

Our ladies were out in force on Tuesday, with fours being the game of choice. Winners on the day were Cheryle, Helen, Joan and Noelene who teamed very well. The semis of the singles were also completed, with Mary Rodwell and Yvonne Eckhardt due to meet in the final.

Wednesday night bowls was another full house, with all enjoying the balmy conditions. Winners here were Ken Hocking, Noelene Brown and Moss, nice to see new faces among the prizes.

Onto Thursday pairs, with twelve pairs bowling in sunshine and wind-free for a change. Best of the two game winners was the pairing of Laurie Forde and John Prout, whilst John Brown and Lee Nightingall took home the repechage vouchers. Thanks to Liberty a couple of encouragement pizzas went the way of Mike Henshaw and President Tucker. Minus 17 was the drawn jackpot number, a couple close but no cigars. Out to $120 this week, remembering that should it reach $150 we will keep drawing until we find a winner.

All championship singles games are down to the last eight, a busy time ahead for all remaining participants knowing there is a strict time-line to be adhered to before Christmas.

Onto pennant, with the Threes scratching for players they were no match for a strong Barham side. Bower vouchers went to the best performed, that being the rink of Mary Rodwell.

The Whites went across to Kerang Golf and weren’t all that well treated, with only Col Black’s side gaining points. Bruce down by three, Yvonne by eight and Col up by two.

Fellow twos the Navy combination were at home to Cohuna, and had a battle-royal right to the end. A one shot final end to Bryan Main’s Cohuna side put them in front by that narrow margin. Jeff Holloway did best for us up by eight in another good performance.

The Ones final result was very similar, all square against Kerang Golf with one end to play. This time the shot went our way leading to a very narrow victory. Harrison Keely’s rink up by six was the best performer on a tough day for bowls.

The Nutrien hams tourney was staged on Monday with results next week, but a field of 22 was most encouraging. Our star day follows on the 11th, also with good numbers at this stage.

Kerang Golf

Pennant resumed after a five-week hiatus and you could see by the smiles on eveyone’s faces that bowlers welcomed the return to competitive bowls.

Hopefully, we can get the balance of the season completed without any interruptions.

The Division 1 team travelled to Cohuna Golf and came up one shot short of a win, with the result not known until the last bowl was delivered.

The very “slippery” greens had all players under pressure and as a consequence, close bowls were worth diamonds.

The Howard McClelland rink led the way with a seven-shot win against Les Whittacker, Frank Ritchie’s team was down by two to Jarrod Hammond and Lloyd Murray down by six to Harrison Keely.

Our Division 2 team provided the highlight of the day with a win against Cohuna Golf 2.

With two rinks winning and the other only two down at the finish, a 59/50 win overall.

Laurie Gray’s team of Ken Pay, Rob “Curly” Curtis and Allison Medson were the winners of the Royal Hotel vouchers for this week, with their eight shot win.

Peter Niall’s rink was up by 3 and Ronnie McKerrow was 2 down at the finish.

Division 3 travelled across town to Kerang to play against Kerang 4.

Earlier in the season, these teams played with Golf coming out winners. However, the Kerang team was too strong this time around, winning by five shots overall.

Gary Borg’s rink was the only winner, by one shot, Noel Robertson down by two and Rob Malseed down by four, so not much in the overall result at the finish.

The third night of the National Milk Twilight Triples was played in warmer conditions and the mossies stayed away until late in the evening.

Maybe Jimmy’s special potion had worn off by then. Thanks Jimmy for looking after our un-welcome friends.

In to the winner’s circle was the team called Misfits, led by Andrew Charles, with Tim Starick and Lorraine Ritchie as team mates.

They are the winners of the Choice Cut Butchers vouchers for this week, on a countback with 30 points and 17 shots up.

Close behind in the runners-up position was the Tige’s Terrors team of Wayne “Tige” Neville, Laurie Gray and Mick Fisher, also with 30 points but only 14 shots up.

The sought-after chocolates to The Golfers, again, even after captain Jack had wielded the selection axe.

Recipients this week were Doug Meehan, Gary “Ned” Pay and Terry Turvey with five points. Wonder what the selectors will do next week.

The ladder sees Lions on top with 76 points, followed by McAndo on 67, Taylor Ashton Painting 66, Deadlies 65 and Tige’s Terrors on 61.

Our CluBarham Star Day Tournament is fast approaching – this coming Sunday.

Entries are still being taken so call Frank Ritchie (0409439029), Aldo (0407310762) or put your name on the sheet on the noticeboard.

Midweek actually gets to start this week with tomorrow’s game being the first for the Midweekers.

The team is Judy McKerrow, Joyce Tuohey, Rosie Laughlin and Lorraine Douglass, with Team 2 Lorraine Ritchie, Mick Pors, Marlene Rawson and Allison Medson. Playing at Leitchville with cars leaving at 8.15 am.

Club Championship matches have now progressed to the second round. Games have to played by Sunday, December 11, so please get your games organised, and make the match committee’s job easy.

Other club games – Men’s Pairs, Men’s Fours, 100 Up and B Grade Singles – entries will close very soon, so if you wish to play, please enter on the sheets on the noticeboard, so draws can be completed and games commenced.
