Systematically abused

THERE was a comment in your paper recently that in the country people don’t feel it worth reporting things as nothing will happen. How true.

A good but sad reflection on that is of a horse in the Gannawarra Shire.

It has been locked in a small yard for about four years, never let it out. In November 2020, it was reported to the authorities – starved, no water for days.

By February 2021, same problem once again, reported this when temperatures reached 40 degrees.

The RSPCA was made aware at that time, but again this year reported in February then March. No water or feed, owner only acting when these reports are made, for a short time then goes back to bring food every five or so days.

Reported again June 4 and 8 this month. The original horse and a second added to the yard in the past month with no water, feed, eating straw and mud, between 4th and 12th, one feed, no visit or action by RSPCA or authorities.

They say we’ll make our inspections aware yet after 18 months the horses are being systematically abused with no action or repercussions on the owner. After all, it is a criminal offence to treat animals as outlined, or is this RSPCA approved cruelty like their Woolworth ads promote?

If these horses were in the main street or edge of town, there would be outrage, but out of sight, out of mind, so it goes on with no action by any of the authorities.
