Kerang couple’s water battle resolved

THE mystery of an expanding pool threatening to destroy a Kerang property has been resolved.

The water began gathering between Greg and Glyndia Gee’s property and the disused Koondrook railway line about five months ago.

Mr Gee said he contacted Gannawarra Shire Council at that stage and was referred to Lower Murray Water, but was advised by the rural water supplier that it had no pipes there.

He also spoke to the owners of a neighbouring property who investigated but couldn’t find a source for the leak.

“We’ve got ducks on it,” Mrs Gee said of the unwanted lake.

The Gees were concerned about the damage being done to their fence.

“We paid $12,000 for it and we don’t want it to fall down,” Mrs Gee said.

Parts of the fence were beginning to warp, with damage visible at both its base and top.

“If it falls down I’ve got an alpaca that will get out, and the chooks and turkeys will get out,” Mrs Gee said.

However, renewed appeals to Gannawarra Shire Council and Lower Murray Water resulted in a breakthrough last Friday.

An issue was discovered with the neighbour’s irrigation system and the water flow was stopped by a Gannawarra Shire Council representative.

Workers from the local council depot swung into action, arriving with pumps to remove the accumulated water.

“It’s not a shire job and it’s not a Lower Murray Water job but they’ve both said they will assist us,” Mrs Gee said.

“I want to thank them for stepping up after a long saga.”

Although previously unaware who owned the affected piece of land, Mrs Gee discovered it belonged to Gannawarra Shire Council.

She said her neighbour was also supportive and willing to take responsibility for any damage to the Gee’s fence.
