Striking memorial for babies

A STRIKING metal tree takes pride of place at the Cohuna cemetery, dedicated to babies without a recognised place of burial or memorial.

The Cohuna Cemetery Trust had received community interest from families and relatives who wanted to acknowledge babies buried in the cemetery without a known place of rest.

“We’ve thought about doing something to commemorate the babies that we don’t know where they are for a long time,” Cohuna Cemetery Trust secretary and treasurer Joy Cassidy said.

There have been discussions during the last few years about the most appropriate memorial.

“We thought about having a brick wall with a tree on it and then (people) could put little leaf plaques on that,” Ms Cassidy said.

However, the idea for a tree sculpture eventually won out, being approved by Cemetery Trust members.

The two-metre tree was purchased in Daylesford and funded by Cohuna Cemetery Trust.

It is situated near the cemetery’s gazebo.

Any family member wishing to commemorate a baby has the opportunity to place a small plaque on the brickwork around the base of the tree.
