Cohuna Consolidated throws open doors

LAST week Cohuna Consolidated School joined schools across the region and the state celebrating more than 150 years of public education in Victoria.

Last Wednesday the school held its open day, complete with a special picnic lunch, welcoming more than 300 people from the wider school community.

The corridors were teeming with excited children as they showed friends and family around the school and took part in quizzes and a word hunt activity around the school.

Cohuna Consolidated School principal Ben Hawthorne is a newcomer to the school and said he had already worked out that the school and the Cohuna community in general were very friendly and community-orientated.

“This open day gives me the opportunity to meet a lot of people who I probably wouldn’t normally get to see,” Mr Hawthorne said.

“People take the time and make the time to come in to the school on days like today and have travelled from all over the traps, especially the grandparents.

“I know they love the chance to come in and see this sort of stuff.

“This is one of our big days of the year, really.

“Education Week gives us the opportunity to highlight and celebrate everything learning and the amazing boundless opportunities that public education has to offer.

“It has really stood the test of time and it is a great opportunity to put it in the spotlight and show everyone what is happening.”

On Monday evening the school held a well-attended information session for prospective Prep students for 2025.

Built in the late 1970s, Cohuna Consolidated School bought together a lot of the smaller schools in the district into one purpose-built location.
