CMFNL – Raiders roll on

KOONDROOK/BARHAM is one win clear on top of the Central Murray Football Netball League ladder after defeating four-time reigning premiers, Kerang on Saturday.

The border side led at every break to win by 14 points – the club’s first victory against their local rivals in more than a decade.

Both sides recorded five scoring shots in the opening term, but the home side’s accuracy in front of goal helped produce a 15-point lead at the first break.

The Raiders’ only behind of the game came in the first quarter, with Neil Bradley’s men kicking goals every time they looked to score for the remainder of the match.

Daniel Mowat – who was declared fit after injuring his hamstring in the previous week’s win against Swan Hill – led the way with three goals, with Nicholas Sims and Tom Lamb booting two goals each for the Raiders.

Kerang struggled with accuracy in front of goal, registering six more scoring shots than Saturday’s hosts.

The Blues challenged in the third quarter with goals to Mark Lloyd, Luke Cotchett, Troy Thamm and Troy Coates moving the side to within 14 points at the final break.

The reigning premiers had their chances in the final term to record their seventh win of the season, but managed only two goals from eight scoring shots.

Cotchett was Kerang’s sole multiple goalkicker for the match, with co-coach, Travis Matheson and Bradlee Pay playing well for the visitors.

Jacob Barrington and Sims were best on ground for the competition leaders, who face fellow top three side, Nyah-Nyah West United this weekend.

Kerang will host Balranald, with the side aiming to boost its percentage with a big win.
