Jarryd’s double gold

A FORMER local resident won two gold medals at the X Games in Austin, Texas, which finished yesterday.

Freestyle Motocross rider, Jarryd McNeil defended his Best Whip medal yesterday morning, adding to his equal-first finish in the Step Up competition on Friday morning Australia time.

The former Murrabit Group School student, who returned to the district earlier this year to train for the popular alternative sports competition, now has seven X Games medals across the underage and open sections.

The 24-year-old tied with the Czech Republic’s Libor Podmol to claim the Step Up competition.

Similar to high jumping, Step Up sees motorcyclists ride up a ramp of dirt and attempt to get over a pole.

McNeil jumped 33 feet in his first appearance in the competition, but could not succeed in getting over the bar at 33.5 feet.

The former local’s second medal came in in his pet event, which involves jumping over a mound of dirt and aiming to be vertical with the ground whilst in the air.

A panel of experts judged McNeil’s effort worthy of the final, with the public vote giving hin the win.

“Blown away right now, two golds this year. Thanks heaps to all my fans, supporters and sponsors,” McNeil wrote on his Instagram account after the win.
