Men’s breakfast satisfies physical and mental needs

THE Cohuna Men’s breakfast is now in its 11th year, with every second month more than 65 men gathering in the Cohuna Memorial Hall from 8am on a Saturday morning.

Event organiser John Webb said that the idea originated from the Home Church group, which he joined in 2010. He had come to a religious epiphany following his own personal issues which took him to what he describes as a very dark deep place.

“We felt like we needed to give men something to come to and have a talk, a yarn and a chance to unload basically,” Mr Webb said.

“The combined churches from Cohuna and Kerang started the men’s breakfasts.

“It’s a good chance for blokes to get together and have a good catch-up.

“The Lions Club supplies the barbecue for each breakfast, and groups from around the district help out with the cooking.

“Every second breakfast we have a guest speaker.”

An additional outcome of the men’s breakfast is the Gannawarra Toy run, now in its 10th year, which last year provided 435 children with toys and raised more than $21,000 for the Kerang, Cohuna and Barham Neighbourhood houses.

Between the toy run and proceeds from the men’s breakfast, the group has supplied 13 cars to needy families.

Gannawarra Shire Council councillor, Keith Link, was on hand to help with the cooking last Saturday and said that the breakfast is very important for men’s health in the community.

“There is always a good roll up and, I think, the men really look forward to it,” Cr Link said.

“The council is at the forefront in supporting all the men’s issues.

“We have an excellent council and excellent council staff and that seems to flow through the rest of society and the local communities.”
