MURRABIT’S historic past as a river, rail and agricultural town will be showcased as part of a new project that includes a heritage trail.
The Murrabit Advancement Association will oversee the project after receiving $37,318 under the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund.
Murrabit Advancement Association president Sandy Foweraker said the project would landscape the south-east side of the Murrabit Public Hall and create a heritage trail.
Ms Foweraker said the Murrabit community welcomed the grant funding, with the works to take place at the Murrabit Public Hall.
The hall forms the centrepiece of the site of the Murrabit Market, which has been successfully running as a community event since 1977.
“The project will create a multi-purpose and accessible events space at our public hall and a heritage trail throughout the town and district,” Ms Foweraker said.
Proposed landscaping includes extending lawn to the front of the hall, the installation of locally manufactured picnic table and chair sets, planting of established trees and the creation of a modern heritage trail, which will extend across the town and district from the public hall.
“Our community has been severely impacted by drought and we will continue to network closely with other community groups to make our town and district a better place to visit and live,” Ms Foweraker said.
“Materials for the project will be purchased locally where possible and our local trades will be engaged in the on-ground works to provide an economic boost to our business community at this difficult time.”
The project will also transform a disused and barren piece of land near the hall into a vibrant community space.
“The heritage trail will bring more of our interesting district history as a river, rail and agricultural town out into the community, for residents and visitors to enjoy,” Ms Foweraker said.
The project will be completed by August.
