Reigning premiers Murrabit impress

The Golden Rivers A grade netball competition has begun with some high scoring games and some close contested hit outs.

Murrabit 61 defeated Hay 39

Reigning premiers Murrabit showed a new look Hay outfit what it takes to be the best in the Golden Rivers, with a 21-goal victory to start their premiership defence.

After a big off-season recruiting several talented players, Hay will no doubt be one of the league’s biggest improvers this season and will improve more as the season goes on. The first quarter was a tight tussle, however, it was in the second quarter that the Blues put their foot down, scoring 19 goals to Hay’s six. Kellie Walker shot all bar one of the Lions 39 goals, while for Murrabit, new goalie Emelia Shannahan showed her best netball in a best on court performance.

Ultima 34 defeated Moulamein 28

A young Ultima outfit defeated Moulamein on their home court by six goals to open their 2024 campaign, with the Roos leading from start to finish.

The fact Ultima were without Louisa Frost in defence and Tayla Foster in the midcourt did not stop the Roos, with junior netballer Scarlet Gray making her A grade debut in her team’s win. Moulamein’s summer produced Central Murray league medallist Hannah Morton, who was outstanding in defence, However, the Swans attackers failed to convert on her defensive efforts. Bianca Brasser for Ultima was strong in defence and gave her team plenty of defensive gain.

Macorna 51 defeated Wandella 27

The Tigers came out 23-goal winners against Wandella at the Macorna Recreation Reserve in the two clubs first encounter of the new season.

Sporting an almost brand-new team, Wandella looked good early in the game with Eboni Greenhill providing some defensive turnovers for the Bombers. It was in the second quarter where Macorna stood strong in defence, with the combination of Erin Delahunty and Emmalea Wishart proving too strong for Wandella’s goalies. April Wishart provided plenty of drive in the midcourt for the Tigers, while Wandella’s Eliza Perryman went into GA and sparked some life into the Bombers. She will be one to watch this season.
