Swimmers take on State’s best

KERANG will be well represented at this year’s Victorian Country Swimming Championships, with six participants travelling to Bendigo for the three-day event.

Four Kerang Amateur Swimming and Life Saving Club members, as well as two locals who represent the Nyah Two Bays-Swan Hill club, will compete at the Bendigo Aquatic Centre from today.

Three club members will compete in one event during country Victoria’s largest swimming meet – Cody Makeham (11 and under male 50-metre breaststroke), Demby Makeham (13-year-old female 100-metre breaststroke) and Kaylee Shipp (11 and under female 50-metre breaststroke) – with Maddison McGowan taking part in two events (13-year-old female 11-metre backstroke and 100-metre freestyle).

Joining the Kerang club members at the meet is Katelyn Wishart. The Nyah Two Bays-Swan Hill representative will compete in the 13-year-old female 100-metre backstroke, 100-metre breaststroke and 100-metre butterfly.

Fellow Nyah Two Bays-Swan Hill representative and Kerang resident, Melissa Sambrooks will have on the busiest schedules at the meet.

The 17-year-old – who is juggling swimming commitments with try-outs to become a Victorian Football League boundary umpire – will compete in the 16 and 17-year-old 100-metre butterfly, backstroke and freestyle, as well as the 200-metre individual medley and 200-metre breaststroke.

Sambrooks will also compete in the women’s 200-metre breaststroke and 100-metre breaststroke.
