New Year tradition returns

A LONG lost tradition of Kerang’s New Year’s Eve celebrations was brought back to life in grand style last Thursday night.

The Miss Kerang New Year’s Eve competition was revived by local woman Joyce Gee to encourage young people to attend the new event at Atkinson Park.

“Congratulations to all the girls for bringing a lovely young atmosphere to this carnival, because tonight is all about family,” Ms Gee said upon taking to the stage to present the finalists.

The 10 finalists were judged on the criterion of “dressed for a carnival” and received red sashes from a judge who moved through the crowd throughout the night.

While Ms Gee said all 10 women were beautifully dressed, there had to be a winner — Brittany O’Regan, up from Bendigo visiting family.

Carly Geary was named runner-up, with Shelby Faulkner was third.

Miss Regan wasn’t aware of the competition, so was surprised to be named Miss Kerang.

“I didn’t know what to think when someone came up and asked how old I was – I thought they were checking IDs,” she said.

“But it’s all just a bit of fun.”
