A BENDIGO woman’s goal to spread mental health awareness by cycling across Victoria reached its midway point on Sunday.
Grace Bannon arrived at Kerang in the early afternoon having completed a 59-kilometre leg of her Into the Blue Journey from Swan Hill.
The Bendigo teacher is midway through her 2370-kilometre journey, which aims to raise awareness and help reduce the stigma attached to mental illnesses.
“The leg to Kerang was good, especially after the ride the day before (140 kilometres from Euston to Swan Hill), which was challenging,” Ms Bannon said.
“I’m now used to feeling sore.”
Family members and friends have taken turns to accompany Ms Bannon on her journey, inspired by her sister and mother, who have, or are dealing with, mental illness.
As part of the journey, Ms Bannon completes public speaking engagements at hotels talking about mental health awareness, as well as handing out gifts and completing random acts of kindness.
Kerang’s overnight stop involved handing out sporting goods and free tickets for a raffle, which will be drawn at the end of the expedition.
“People always ask how much does tickets, or the goods I hand out, cost,” Ms Bannon said.
The journey continued yesterday with the 100-kilometre leg to Echuca via Cohuna and Gunbower.
“I usually look at the map and see which towns I will stop at, but often I will pass through a town and think I might just stop here,” Ms Bannon said.
The 40-day journey – which is yet to embark on the eastern half of Victoria – will finish at Elwood on January 20.
