Keep kids up to date with dental health

CHILDREN and families are being reminded this week of the importance of oral health as part of Northern District Community Health’s (NDCH) Smiles 4 Miles program.

NDCH will be visiting local kindergartens to deliver free oral health packs and promote the importance of healthy eating, drinking, daily toothbrushing and regular dental visits.

All children and infants under 18 receive free dental care at Boort District Health (BDH), a supporter of the Smiles 4 Miles program.

Services available at BDH include comprehensive examinations, fillings, X-rays, extractions and emergency treatment.

When visiting local kindergartens as part of Dental Health Week, NDCH will be joined by Chomper, the dragon mascot.

NDCH joint acting chief executives Deanne Radcliffe and Mansoor Hussain said the week is a great way to bring smiles to young faces.

“Sometimes life gets very busy, but Dental Health Week is a great reminder that looking after our oral health is essential to our overall health and wellbeing – and that good habits need to start early in life,” Ms Radcliffe said.

This year, a story walk has been added in Cohuna, featuring the book Going to the Dentist by Anne Civardi.

“Stories about visiting the dentist, combined with physical activity, help children remember the importance of looking after their teeth,” Ms Radcliffe added.

Families may also be eligible for free or low-cost dental care through the Child Dental Benefits Schedule at private dental practices in Kerang and Cohuna.

Contact your local dentist to learn more and check your availability.

BDH is located at 31 Kiniry Street, Boort, and open Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5pm.
