It’s a well documented fact that dissent for the proposed mining project in the Gannawarra Shire came largely from a group of environmental activists living outside of the township.
The objections from the vociferous minority came from across Victoria including East Gippsland, Bendigo, Western Victoria, Ballarat and a small number from around the Lalbert area and was obviously politically motivated.
It’s a sad reality that the majority of the community in Kerang and Swan Hill, who understand the enormous benefits that such a project would bring to the region, did not have the voice to support it.
As an out-of-town Kerang investor, I missed the opportunity to raise my voice before the cut-off date for public submissions.
Local businesses who understand the financial benefits such a project would bring to the area, were also reluctant to speak up in fear of a backlash that would negatively impact their livelihood.
Unfortunately we live in a time where minority groups with an inordinate sense of moral entitlement, believe they can take over the social commons by sitting on their ideological high horse and closing ranks to stifle any debate.

Australian businesses and government realise the importance of supporting an industry essential in facilitating the domestic transition to net zero.
I’m not advocating that we blithely ignore the potentially negative environmental impacts but that is exactly why mining applications must conform to rigorous governmental controls and procedures.
Every mining company must prepare a detailed environmental impact statement and management plan showing how potential damage to the environment will be mitigated and managed.
It’s not too late for the people of Kerang and Swan Hill to speak up in favour of this massive project that will create huge employment opportunities and boost the local economy.
A petition can still be circulated to be signed by those in favour of the project which will add weight and support to the proposed Goschen mining project.
