Embracing the true spirit

COHUNA’S efforts to embrace the true Christmas spirit continued on Sunday night.

Around 200 people gathered for a night of songs and celebrations as part of the Cohuna Progress Association-supported Carols in the Park event.

Inclement weather meant the fourth edition of the event occurred inside the Cohuna Memorial Hall for the second time in its history, but it did not deter those who attended from enjoying the celebrations.

“With the way the weather was, we were playing it by ear whether it would go ahead in Garden Park, especially with electrical equipment,” event co-ordinator, Elaine Keely said.

“Luckily we had not set up. We looked at the radar and saw what weather was predicted.”

Santa Claus made his customary arrival on the back of a motorcycle, then spent 15 minutes working alongside Cohuna Leos Club members in handing out bags of lollies to children in attendance.

Attention then turned to inside the hall, where local musicians, school choirs and the audience joined in with the singing of many traditional and modern carols, many relating to the real reason for the season, the birth of Jesus Christ.

“Everyone wants to keep helping out; the primary schools keep helping out and each year we get a different artist,” Mrs Keely said.

“When we started, we wanted to get the feeling of Christmas back, but unfortunately the message is lost in the hustle and bustle that occurs at the time.”

Organisers are hoping to return to Garden Park for the 2017 edition of the event, with a call for new committee members to assist with running the celebrations.
