Nyah win B-grade final

IT was two Swan Hill District Cricket premierships in a single day for Nyah District, who added B grade honours on Saturday.

Batting first, Nyah’s total was possible thanks to an impressive innings from their last batsman standing, Ethan Curran.

Coming in at number nine, Curran smashed seven fours and a six to score an unbeaten 49, as he and Ben Sheridan pushed Nyah’s score forward.

The pair put on a 68-run partnership, as Nyah’s score totalled 8/151 off their 40 overs.

Three Sea Lake Woomelang bowlers took two wickets each, Joel Donnan and Judd Durie unable to be split, finishing with figures of 2/16.

Zachary Wemyss managed 2/22 off his eight overs, while Joel Clohesy took the remaining wicket with figures of 1/11.

After falling to 2/20 early in their chase, number four batsman Callan Noonan put together a strong performance to get Sea Lake Woomelang back on track.

Noonan scored 51 runs off 62 balls, but Nyah’s bowlers and fielders quickly swung the momentum back in their favour.

Joel Donnan was run out for 13 by Ben Sheridan, while a late innings of 18 from Wemyss wasn’t quite enough to stop the rampaging Demons.

With a single ball remaining, and a six-run deficit between the sides, Nyah’s Ritchie Boulton clean-bowled Wemyss to win the premiership.

Ethan Coe was the pick of the Nyah bowlers with 2/14 off just four overs, while Ben Sheridan, Owen Harrop and Ritchie Boulton all took two wickets each.

It was another disappointing result for Sea Lake Woomelang in the C grade, as they fell to Balranald.

Winning the toss and electing to bowl, Sea Lake Woomelang were up and about when they had Balranald at 2/16.

But it was the middle order runs from Toby Lay and skipper Jake Schmidt that provided Balranald with a competitive total.

Lay top scored with 37 runs, while Schmidt added an unbeaten 34. Number eight batsman Sam Curran was also important with an unbeaten 27.

Henry Cox bowled outstandingly for his side, taking 3/19 off seven overs, while Chase Tait, Issac Durie and Hugo Warne each took a wicket.

It was a rocky start for Sea Lake Woomelang’s chase, Joel Lloyd dismissed for a duck leaving them at 1/0.

Top order runs steadied the ship, as Colin Durie scored 11 and Joe Summerhayes 10.

Troy Davis top scored for Sea Lake Woomelang with 27 before he was run out by Toby Lay.

Balranald’s Jake Lockhart claimed his side’s best bowling figures with 2/5, while Lachlan Button took 2/15 and Jake Schmidt 2/21.

Sea Lake Woomelang were dismissed for 95 runs, handing Balranald a 43-run win.
