Bowls notes

Cohuna

THE winners of last Tuesday’s social bowls was the all-girls team of Terri Hancock, Marian Smith and Gaye Simms.

The preliminary final of Midweek Pennant was played last week at Cohuna Golf.

Cohuna1 got up by 15 shots over Cohuna Golf, with Frank Tonn’s team winning by 7 shots, Mike Hoffman’s team by 12 shots and Wayne Brook’s team went down by four shots.

Some great bowling was enjoyed by all who came along to watch.

Cohuna1 now advance to the grand final, to be played on Wednesday at Kerang against Barham 1. Good luck to all bowlers, it should be a great game with Cohuna aiming for two pennants in a row.

Congratulations to our popular life member, Rob Wilson, who will be celebrating his 80th birthday this week. We know you’ll have a great party, Rob, best wishes from us all.

Kerang

THE grand final was played in brilliant sunshine on what seemed to be slippery greens.

Kerang 3 had their date with destiny and didn’t quite get the chocolates against a solid Barham 4 unit.

We had a couple of grand final first-timers who applied themselves very well to the task at hand.

The final margin was 13 shots with one winning rink. That rink was team Coobs once again with a 33-17 score line at the death.

Team Byrne battled their way to a three-shot loss and, unfortunately, team Rosewall went down heavily.

The club are extremely proud of your efforts and hope to see you all around the place next season.

Details of the presentation night will become clear in the near future and will be announced here.

Please make yourself available for this night and celebrate what has been a successful season even though there won’t be any pennant premiership photos added to the walls this year.

Many clubs would take our season in what yielded a preliminary final appearance in both Division 1 and 2 and a grand final appearance in Division 3.

So let’s all get along to the bowling club on our night of nights and pat each other on the back and enjoy each other’s company.

Kerang had a team entered into the state triples and we wish them all the best.

They are Jason Brown and Mark Hamon with local talent in Kane Wilson who now represents Barham. Best of luck.

Congratulations go to Kim and Kerry Watts on winning the mixed pairs competition in a close final against Alyne Fagg and Som Pascoe. It was a fine display of draw bowling.

Next Tuesday will be the last day of early starts for Black Duck and will then go back to names down before 11am on gameday.

The club would like to thank the members for their ongoing support of the Black Duck Social Triples.

This week we had 18 players enter with Kevin Teasdale, Reg Hipwell and Helen Pendlebury winning the day with +16 with their 2 wins.

Second game winner was Lindsay Hein, Peter Waters and Terry Nolan with +14.

The jackpot has swollen to $597 and would be a nice little addition to anyone’s pocket.

Our Easter tournament starts on Good Friday, March 24 and we have a good number of visitors already filling positions in the draw.

But we need more local entries, whether they be singles or teams, to make this another well supported event at our club.

We have Alyne Fagg and Jeffrey Jackson both renewing their knowledge on the laws of bowls under the tutelage of Yvonne Eckhardt..

The NDPA should be very happy with Yvonne’s ongoing application to this vocation.

I would like to take this opportunity to send some thanks out to Alyne Fagg for all he does around the traps.

Also to Kevin Teasdale, who isn’t just a pretty face behind the bar. Both these gentlemen work tirelessly for our club without question.

To our club umpires who not only play pennant, but supply us with direction when we need it.

I would like to thank Kerang Bowling Club and their members. We are an eclectic bunch, but geez, there is always a laugh had and that is what makes it so great to be a part of.

The culture is driven by our membership and it is of a high quality.

Kerang Golf

THE Saturday Pennant season is over and congratulations to all the winners.

Cohuna Golf were too powerful for Kerang Golf in Division 1.

In Division 2, Cohuna Golf were also winners over Barham and Barham achieved success over Kerang in Division 3.

The Division 1 grand final was only the second time that Kerang Golf had appeared in the play-off, after wins over Barham and Kerang the previous two Saturdays.

However, the fairytale did not eventuate as the strong Cohuna Golf combination slowly assumed control and went on to a 26-shot win.

The shining light for Kerang Golf was the Frank Ritchie rink, who came from behind and defeated Bluey Fletcher by four shots.

Howard McClelland’s team succumbed to the aggressive Harrison Keely by 11 shots and Ritchie Murray’s crew lost their way early and couldn’t get back in to the game against Jarrod Hammond.

Cohuna Golf have been the benchmark team in Northern District over the past 20 years, with about 15 premierships in those years.

Kerang Golf’s challenge was meritorious, coming from 4th place and winning against more fancied teams in the previous two weeks.

Maybe next year will be Kerang Golf’s turn.

Attention now focuses on the Midweek grand finals on Wednesday at Kerang, where our Kerang Golf team attempts to win back-to-back flags in Division 2, against Barham 3.

Good luck to the all-female team members for success. It would be great if members could get along and support this team. Starting time is 9.30am.

The third-last night of the Ian “Squizzy” Taylor barefoot bowls was completed in very warm conditions last Wednesday evening.

The winners were Hayes Real Estate with a massive 33 points. Team members Graeme Hayes, David Wood, Rodney Pascoe and Nathan Hipworth won the Choice Cut Butcher’s vouchers for this week.

Kerang Truck Repairs had a good night, to finish runners-up. Well done, Shane Waddingham, Heath O’Brien, Mick Fisher and “surprise packet” Ronnie Waddingham.

Chocolates to Team Stacey, but they were very considerate, as they had won them before, so passed them on to Lake Charm Boat Club. Hayes Real Estate lead with 146, followed by Taylor Ashton Painting on 132, Lions 131 and Royal Hotel on 130. A very interesting final two weeks coming up, to see who gets their name on the perpetual shield.

There was no Thursday social last week, as the sun was shining and the temperature was a little hot. The trip away is this weekend, and a good time will be had by all who are going.

Members are reminded that the presentation day is on Sunday, April 14.
